Hurtigruten continues its environmental lead with third battery-hybrid ship

Hurtigruten Expeditions has continued its green revolution, cruising with MS Otto Sverdrup, its third battery-hybrid powered cruise ship.

The new vessel began her inaugural sail from Hamburg last week with the Norwegian coast in its sights. 

She joins MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen as one of Hurtigruten’s battery-hybrid powered cruise ships, with Hurtigruten Expeditions making clear their intention to make new ground on green cruising. “We saw the travel industry’s global pause as a golden opportunity to invest, upgrade and improve our ships and product. As we return to cruising, MS Otto Sverdrup will feature a combination of advanced green technology, including new battery packs, that will ensure an even more sustainable way of exploring the Norwegian coast,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen MS Otto Sverdrup hitting the seas is the company’s first step towards restarting operations.  The line has also been increasing its offerings, adding West African destinations Bissagos Islands and Cape Verde to its 2022 itineraries, as well as new expedition cruises to the marine wonderland, the Galapagos Islands. Hurtigruten has announced a 17-day expedition of Russia’s White Sea, to take passengers to a unique corner of the world.  Other highlights in Hurtigrutens 2022/2023 winter program are cruises to Antarctica, Alaska and its first UK based year-round expeditions aboard MS Maud.  Ms Lassessen recently said: “2022 is set to be our most exciting year ever, introducing a number of new exciting itineraries in three different continents.
