The first-timers who bought a $200,000 round-the-world-cruise

The first-timers who bought a $200,000 round-the-world-cruise

Barry and Marcia Southern have never cruised before.ย  So they popped into their local Cruiseabout at Turramurra looking for a short trip to try it out.

What they came out with was a 102-night round-the-world Bridge-to-Bridge journey from Sydney to London, calling at 60 ports and 29 countries.

Thatโ€™s some cruise test!

The Southerns are among some 200 Australians who set out on this week with 494 other passengers for Azamara Journeyโ€™s first ever world cruise.

โ€œIโ€™m so looking forward to it,โ€ said Marcia, over a celebration breakfast with Captain Johannes Tysse.

Australians have fallen in love with world cruises. Almost every international line is now offering them with great success.

But Azamaraโ€™s will be special, given the lineโ€™s bold promise of lingering longer in ports and producing โ€œAzamazingโ€ evenings for its guests.

The cruise is divided into eight segments, but 46 passengers like the Southerns are staying the course until London on June 16.

The Southerns paid some $160,000 for cabin 8040 all the way, and booked a year out. Barry maintains that, with shore excursions and a side trip to the Taj Mahal, the venture will cost them $200,000.

The cruise takes in Singapore, Dubai, the Suez Canal, Rome, Barcelona , Lisbon and London with lots in between.

The ship was recently refitted and has new Broadway shows and menus for the trip.

Captain Tysse took time out to explain the Azamara difference.

He said in the Tasman Sea he discovered a lady who was having a birthday in the famous Prime C steakhouse.ย  But her seat meant she had her back to a gorgeous sunset.

The gallant captain turned the ship around so she could see the disappearing rays โ€“ and earned a round of applause as she dissolved in tears of joy.

โ€œWeโ€™re smaller and we do things differently,โ€ he said.

So what do you pack for a world cruise?

Marcia and Barry have six bags between them.ย  But Azamara have provided a handy graphic on how to pack with lots of useful information.

Norwegian Cruise Lines float out their latest and Alaskan bound ship, Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Cruise Lines float out their latest and Alaskan bound ship, Norwegian Bliss

Itโ€™s just weeks away from the launch of Norwegian Cruise Linesโ€™ latest ship, the Norwegian Bliss and she has emerged from the building dock in Germany.

Designed to sail around Alaska, she is now in the final stages of construction โ€“ sheโ€™ll be kitted out with some of the latest features including a two-story race car track, a laser tag course, dozens of restaurants and much more.

Sheโ€™s the third Breakaway Plus ship and sheโ€™ll accommodate around 4,000 passengers. The float out was also revealed the shipโ€™s signature hull artwork designed by world-renowned marine life artists and conservationist, Wyland.

Best known for his marine life paintings, sculptures and grand scale murals, or โ€œWhaling Walls,โ€ Norwegian Blissโ€™ hull design is named โ€œCruising with the Whalesโ€ and features a stunning image of a mother humpback whale and her calf as the centerpiece of the design which reflects the Alaskan wildlife.

Norwegian Bliss will also be the first ship to be built with features for keen amateur naturalists like a 180-degree Observation Lounge where guests can see whale breaches and the stunning scenes of Alaska and Canada.

She will also be the first Norwegian Cruise Line ship to make her debut in Seattle, with cruises beginning May 2018.  Norwegian Bliss will offer weekly seven-day cruises to see Americaโ€™s last frontier with ports-of-call including Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, along with scenic glacier cruising.

โ€œOur partners at Meyer Werft have done an excellent job realising our vision for a ship designed to experience Alaska and the Caribbean like never before,โ€ said Andy Stuart, Norwegian Cruise Line president and chief executive officer.

โ€œWe are counting down the days until her official debut in Seattle summer, where guests will be able to race around the worldโ€™s largest two-level race track at sea against the backdrop of Alaskaโ€™s wild frontier, and enjoy other first-at-sea experiences.โ€

Following preview events in New York City, Miami and Los Angeles, Norwegian Bliss will sail into Seattle for her official christening on May 30, with North-American summer cruises to Alaska beginning June 2.

She will spend her Northern-Hemisphere summer seasons with seven-day cruises to Alaska, and North-American autumn seasons sailing to the Mexican Riviera from Los Angeles.

In the North-American winter of 2018 she will sail to the Caribbean from Miami, and in the 2019 Northern-Hemisphere autumn/winter season she will cruise from New York City to Florida, the Bahamas and Caribbean.
