Eulogy for a cat that captured the hearts of tens of thousands of cruisers: Bug Naked

  • Bug Naked, the cat who captured the hearts of Celebrity Cruisers, is no more
  • Capt Kate McCue announced her passing just before New Year’s Eve
  • Here’s we pay tribute to the cat who had an Instagram following for 80,000 and had better sea legs than many humans

Today, we gather in spirit to honour and remember Bug Naked, the extraordinary seafaring cat who brought joy and companionship to all who knew her.

Bug was no ordinary feline; she was a creature of the sea, a steadfast companion to Capt. Kate McCue aboard the Celebrity Beyond, and a beloved friend to countless officers, crew members, and cruisers alike. Her life, though far too brief, was a testament to the magic of connection and the profound ways even the smallest of creatures can leave an indelible mark on our hearts.

Bug’s journey began in 2017 when Capt. McCue, looking for companionship in the lonely life of a ship’s captain – her husband is fleet chief engineer with Royal Caribbean and cannot sail with her – spotted a picture of a hairless Sphynx cat. There followed a long process of getting Celebrity’s approval for what she called her “marine support mammal”.

McCue, herself a considerable social media personality, wrote: “After I was promoted to captain, I figured out quickly that it can be one of the loneliest jobs out there. You’re out to sea, away from family and friends, you’re everyone’s boss and having unbiased relationships is a challenge. We could have family sail with us but since my husband also works at sea on different ships, there was still a void.”

From the moment Bug set paw aboard the ship, she became a beacon of warmth and joy in the vast expanse of the ocean. With her big blue eyes and unique charm, Bug transcended her role as a pet — calming anxious officers during critical maneuvours and bringing a sense of lightness to even the most challenging days at sea.

Bug’s influence reached far beyond the bridge of the Celebrity Beyond. She was a celebrity in her own right, her presence sparking smiles and laughter among passengers and crew.

Bug Trivia nights became a highlight of many cruises, and the lucky winners who earned the chance to hold her carried away memories as precious as treasures. Her daily strolls in a pet stroller were an event, her outfits—from cozy sweaters to formal officer dress—a source of delight for her admirers.

During the uncertain days of the pandemic, when ships lay idle and the world seemed adrift, Bug’s presence became a symbol of resilience and hope. In videos and photos shared by Capt. McCue, Bug could be seen basking in the sun, donning sailor garb, or gazing serenely out at the endless horizon. These moments of quiet beauty reminded us all of the simple joys that sustain us, even in the stormiest of times.

Bug’s passing at the age of 8 years and six months has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, both on land and at sea. The grief shared by her shipmates and the broader cruising community speaks volumes about the special bond she fostered.

As Capt. McCue so eloquently put it, Bug was “one in a billion”—an angel, a sidekick, and the saltiest of seafaring cats. Her loss is deeply felt, but her memory endures, carried on the waves and in the hearts of those who loved her.

Bug Naked’s life reminds us that even the smallest among us can have the greatest impact. She brought people together, put personality to the vast and complex world of ocean travel, and reminded us all to find joy in the journey.

As we bid farewell to our dear Bug, let us celebrate the life she lived, the joy she brought, and the love she inspired. Fair winds and following seas, sweet Bug. You will always be part of the crew.

  1. Condolences Captain Cate, my sister and I were aboard the Beyond this past March and remember you and “Bug”. I booked a cruise on the Beyond, February 14th, to celebrate my wife’s retirement. Do you plan on getting another Spynx? Again, sorry for your loss.

  2. I have always been afraid to take a cruise. I was beginning to feel better about it after meeting and following Bug. I will miss her terribly. Thank you Captain Kate for sharing such a beautiful baby with us. Maybe some day I will meet and sail with you. Love to Bug.
