Norwegian Cruise Line has finally received the keys to the long-awaited Prima after taking possession of the ship on 29 July at the Fincantieri shipyard near Venice, Italy.
It’s the first of six ships to be delivered from the new Prima class – the first new class of ships to be introduced in almost a decade. The remaining ships in the class will be delivered through 2027, including the Viva, which will begin sailing in mid-2023.
Before sailing off on its inaugural voyage to Amsterdam later this month, it will be the first major cruise ship to be christened in Iceland on 27 August 2022.
Katy Perry, the ship’s godmother, will be present to bless and officially name the ship and will also perform at the ceremony.

Part of a “thrilling new era in cruising”, according to Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line, the Prima hosts the cruise line’s first three-level race track at sea, a 10-storey free-fall slide, multiple infinity pools and the Ocean Boulevard – a deck wrapping around the entire ship offering alfresco dining experiences.
“We cannot wait to welcome our guests on board,” said Mr Sommer.
