Amazing footage of a 19-year-old man swimming to stay alive after jumping from Deck 10 of the Carnival Fascination has emerged on social media.
It is claimed the man, reportedly on his honeymoon, deliberately jumped.
He swam for 45 minutes before being hauled into a lifeboat by crew.
The ship was scheduled to call in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday.
But, according to reports, guests were surprised after spotting the man swimming in the water and shouting for help.
Tweets from passengers showed the man being rescued.
The Carnival ship, which can carry 2,000 passengers, was on a 7-day southern Caribbean cruise. Puerto Rico and Barbados act as the vessel’s homeport.
If it is shown he deliberately jumped overboard, Carnival is likely to take firm action against him.
In January 2019 a man jumped from the railings of his balcony from Symphony of the Seas while in Nassau, that video went viral and he was permanently banned by Royal Caribbean.
The man is lucky to be alive. Last year, only three of the 23 people who went overboard from a cruise ship were rescued, indicating a survival rate of just over 10 percent.
If someone wants to take their life by jumping overboard on a cruise ship a) they must be really unhinged and desperately unhappy, especially if they are away with family or friends. b) they may have or not premeditated doing it.
Please everyone out there be aware of the people around you look out for changes and depression and don’t be afraid to ask “are you ok” “how can I help”
And really Tracey, I do feel for you that it disrupted your holiday, imagine how many people that his death affected!!
Please people show some compassion to others and perhaps if more of us did then there wouldn’t be as many suicides.
I was on the Carnival Spirit recently and a young fellow decided to leave this world by jumping overboard late at night. Sad for the family but also all of us we missed a port that most of us booked for, no communication from staff, no consideration for all of us that had to stare out at sea all day looking and wondering. Such a sad day and things didnt improve after that and it was the first night.
Never travelling Carnival again.
Hope they charge the guy from jumping of Princess cruise fur all cost involved and banned him. All carnival ships should be notified as who needs this stupidity on their ships. I cruise to relax not be stressed out by stupidity with it without alcohol involved. Hope she asked for an annulment of marriage.
