- A cruise ship sailing through the Drake Passage has seen massive 35-foot waves.
- A remarkable video shows passengers being thrown around the ship as the conditions strike.
- This is common for the Drake Passage, but it is perfectly safe.
An amazing video taken from a travel blogger has shown a waves battering a cruise ship as it passes through the infamous Drake Passage.
The Drake Passage is known around the world for its notoriously rough sailing conditions, and the sailing for Lesley Anne Murphy proved no different.
She wrote: “I am proud to say we survived not one but two Drake Shakes!
“For context, the Drake Passage is the body of water between the tip of Argentina and Antarctica.
“It’s infamous for its extremely rough seas. If you’re lucky, you get the Drake Lake. If you’re like us, you get the Drake Shake with 35 ft waves.”
Murphy ensured that she and the passengers were not only safe, but the experience turned out to be rather fun.
“Yes, we were safe and it was insane…and at times, even fun? 1000% worth it for this trip of a lifetime! We were told to stay in our cabins for an entire afternoon yesterday, and there were some silver linings amongst this whole ordeal. We got some downtime, we laughed a lot.”
As always, the comments were in awe of the power of the passage, one read, “That is terrifying even as a video”, and another. I would think it’s amazing while also frantically crying”.

There sort of rough seas are nothing new for the Drake passage, with previous reports of 30 metre waves and 185km/h winds.
However, the passage is generally unavoidable for those looking to make it to the White Continent, however, there are ways you can arrive without facing it in all its might.
The reality is that crossing the passage on a modern cruise ship is extremely safe, with the most common problem that cruisers might face being seasickness.
As can be seen in the video above, even with huge waves, modern ships will stay fairly steady and generally don’t run the risk of serious damage or harm to passengers.
My husband and I were very fortunate to have a wonderful easy sail through the Passage. Must admit though, I was waiting for the rough ride to arrive!!
