Carnival Elation is the seventh of Carnival’s eight Fantasy-class vessels. Debuting in 1998, Elation was the first cruise ship equipped with Azipod Propulsion. Instead of the traditional propeller shaft and rudder system, this state-of-the-art system enhanced the ship’s maneuverability and gives a vibration-free ride. Elation was also the first ship to ever have a dedicated space for conference meetings and incentive groups. Dress code is casual during the day, a tad dressier at night. Carnival recommends a $12.95 per person per day gratuity.

Elation has 1,021 cabins, 60 per cent of which have ocean views. Most cabins are about 17 square metres and are furnished with king-sized bed, small desk and chairs, TV, telephone, closet and sets of drawers with ample storage. The bed features Carnival’s trademark Comfort Bed system. The bathroom is utilitarian. Full suites come with extra perks such as whirlpool baths. Room service is available 24 hours a day.

Elation offers two dining options – set seating (at 6pm or 8:15pm) or the flexible option, Your Time Dining (any time between 5.45pm and 9.30pm). There are two dining rooms on board – Inspiration and Imagination. Other options include Tiffany’s Bar and Grill, a 24-hour pizzeria, a complimentary sushi bar, and the Chef’s Table, an intimate venue that serves 12 passengers.

Elation has dedicated 1,115 square meters of space to Spa Carnival. It features a variety of treatments and massages including Swedish massage, deep-tissue, deep-cleansing facials, manicures and pedicures, hydralift and aroma-pure facial. Men and women have separate steam and sauna rooms. The fitness centre is equipped with the latest cardio and strength machines and holds classes such as Pathways to Yoga and Pathways to Pilates for an additional fee of $10. Body composition analysis and personal training sessions are also available. Outdoor recreation includes a nine-hole mini-golf course, Ping Pong tables, basketball and volleyball courts, and a jogging track.

Camp Carnival sorts children in age groups and offers them age-appropriate programs. After 10pm, Camp Carnival Night Owls opens and kids can continue playing and hanging out in a supervised environment until 3am. Twelve- to 14-year-olds have their own zone called Circle C where they can chill out and play video games. Club 02, for older teenagers, is where pool parties are held. Carnival also offers babysitting at $6 per hour.
