Singapore is leading the region’s charge back to big ship cruising next week, with Quantum of the Seas sailing short itineraries to nowhere.

While we’re waiting for the vaccine, these journeys are an important part of what the new cruise experience will look like. And Quantum of the Seas will be homeported in Brisbane next year – so Australians may not escape the new style of safe cruising.

The headline message: from now on, you’ll need a pocket full of technology to keep you safe, so forget about going off grid.

For a start, there is the arrival of the aptly-named Tracelet – the latest in wearable technology that will tell the ship exactly where you are.

Passengers will get their own Tracelet at the terminal before they board. Not exactly Bulgari, but at least it does the job.

Passengers will need to prove they’ve had a COVID test before they arrive. And Royal Caribbean are insisting on an rtPCR SARS-CoV-2 test no longer than three days old. Certificates must be produced, but at least the cost is included in your fare and you have to bring your negative test result with you on embarkation day.

Guests need to download the  TraceTogether app or get a TraceTogether token in order to board the ship.

You’ll need your Tracelet, your SeaPass card and your token with you at all times.

And your smart phone will also be essential. Royal Caribbean’s smart phone app will be used for contactless dining, shore excursion, activity and entertainment reservations, as well as the onboard safety drill.

To make sure you dodge queues, passengers need to arrive during pre-ordered check-in times so they can be screened.

Now you can enjoy your cruise!
