Classic car buffs headed into the Interior on an Alaska cruise-tour this season can enjoy the newly expanded exhibits of the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum at the Wedgewood Resort. Often used by Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line for tour passengers staying overnight in Fairbanks, the Wedgewood is connected to the Fairbanks International Airport and the Alaska Railroad Depot by a trolley line that also serves downtown and area attractions, such as the University of Alaska and Pioneer Park.

The collection at the Fountainhead Museum now numbers over 75 vehicles, some of which are in “original unrestored condition,” while others look like “they just rolled off the showroom floor.” Some are rare gems, believed to be “the only examples of their marques known to remain,” the museum says. In addition to its classic car collection, the museum now features new exhibits on bicycle history, the historic Fairbanks-Valdez trail, vintage fashions from the Victorian through early Swing eras, plus an impressive display of historic Alaskan motoring photos and archival movie footage. Visitors can watch repairs being made to the cars and hear the roar of engines otherwise long silent.

But even those not planning to visit Alaska this season can access the museum’s exhibits through a revamped website, which includes an online photo gallery and a list of vehicles in the collection. Prospective visitors, car buffs and armchair travelers alike can log on to www.fountainheadmuseum.com and send an e-postcard from their choice of three classic vehicles.
