Virgin Voyages continues on its path of rebellion in the latest reveal of their crew uniforms. They feature the signature Virgin Red and black and finished off with capes, leather body harness and sneakers.
The line collaborated with British fashion designer Gareth Pugh to create uniforms that reflects the line’s ‘rebellious luxe’ aesthetic and it was showcased at London Fashion Week last weekend.
“For this project, we were really allowed to push the boundaries, and to redefine the idea of what constitutes a uniform. We ultimately wanted to make everything about it modern, luxurious and desirable — to allow the entire crew to look and feel like a million dollars, in keeping with the rest of the experience,” said Mr Pugh.
The collection, which was two years in the making, includes looks with sharp body hugging tailoring to relaxed pillowcase tunic shirts and dresses which are a nod to the early days of British punk.
The red sneakers are custom designed by PLAE, to allow the crew to comfortably stay on their feet and look striking at the same time. They are also made with eco-friendly lining sourced from coffee grounds through sustainable technology and are manufactured in PLAE’s fair labor factory using water-based glue and renewable materials wherever possible.
Richard Branson told Vogue, “There was something rebellious about Gareth’s work, and that really spoke to what Virgin is all about. Gareth and his designs didn’t feel forced to fit in with the Virgin Voyages look—it was a natural fit. We wanted to make sure that Virgin Voyages’s crew uniforms were unlike any other and truly original.”
Mr Pugh also told Vogue that he has plans to be one of the first passengers on board the Scarlet Lady when she launches in April 2020, sailing from Miami to the Caribbean.
“I might have to bring my steamer and some safety pins to do some live alterations!” jokes Mr Pugh.
