Luxury cruise line Silversea Cruises has celebrated the arrival of Silver Origin in a ceremony in the Galapagos Islands.

The expedition ship hosted guests on the ship’s zodiac, toasting a glass of champagne to the new vessel.

Johanna Carrion, a celebrated conservationist and resident of the Galapagos Islands was announced as the godmother of the ship, a gesture by Silversea showing their commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly cruising.

It was the first ship christening under new Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty, who was just one of a number of top ranked officials present from the industry.

Mr Liberty said: “My heartfelt congratulations to the Silversea team on this milestone.

“Silversea’s efforts to support long-term conservation here in the Galapagos Islands speak to our commitment to the environment. Our approach is built on the mantra that ‘respect for the oceans is not a choice, it’s a way of life.”

Roberto Martinoli, CEO of Silversea Cruises, says Silver Origin’s debut marks a moment of recognition for preserving the planet as it is.

“Beyond just visiting the most beautiful corners of our planet, Silversea aims to enrich each destination. This is especially true in the Galápagos Islands.

Silver Origin is our strongest means to inspire travellers to safeguard the wellbeing of this beautiful archipelago for future generations.”

As part of this commitment, Silversea has launched the Silversea Fund for the Galapagos, to support a selection of educational projects every year, aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the spectacular islands. Donors to the fund will receive benefits with Silversea.

Conservationist Johanna Carrion said: “It is a great honour to be selected as the Godmother of Silver Origin.

“Silversea’s support for the Scalesia Foundation helps to safeguard the wellbeing of the Galápagos Islands for generations to come. I look forward to strengthening the collaboration between Silversea Cruises and the Scalesia Foundation, as we continue to foster long-term conservation through education on sustainability.”

The boat’s design also entwines itself with sustainability, including a dynamic positioning system that protects the delicate seabed, a freshwater purification system is all suites, reef-safe sunblock for all guests and more.
