The first-timers who bought a $200,000 round-the-world-cruise

The first-timers who bought a $200,000 round-the-world-cruise

Barry and Marcia Southern have never cruised before.  So they popped into their local Cruiseabout at Turramurra looking for a short trip to try it out.

What they came out with was a 102-night round-the-world Bridge-to-Bridge journey from Sydney to London, calling at 60 ports and 29 countries.

That’s some cruise test!

The Southerns are among some 200 Australians who set out on this week with 494 other passengers for Azamara Journey’s first ever world cruise.

“I’m so looking forward to it,” said Marcia, over a celebration breakfast with Captain Johannes Tysse.

Australians have fallen in love with world cruises. Almost every international line is now offering them with great success.

But Azamara’s will be special, given the line’s bold promise of lingering longer in ports and producing “Azamazing” evenings for its guests.

The cruise is divided into eight segments, but 46 passengers like the Southerns are staying the course until London on June 16.

The Southerns paid some $160,000 for cabin 8040 all the way, and booked a year out. Barry maintains that, with shore excursions and a side trip to the Taj Mahal, the venture will cost them $200,000.

The cruise takes in Singapore, Dubai, the Suez Canal, Rome, Barcelona , Lisbon and London with lots in between.

The ship was recently refitted and has new Broadway shows and menus for the trip.

Captain Tysse took time out to explain the Azamara difference.

He said in the Tasman Sea he discovered a lady who was having a birthday in the famous Prime C steakhouse.  But her seat meant she had her back to a gorgeous sunset.

The gallant captain turned the ship around so she could see the disappearing rays – and earned a round of applause as she dissolved in tears of joy.

“We’re smaller and we do things differently,” he said.

So what do you pack for a world cruise?

Marcia and Barry have six bags between them.  But Azamara have provided a handy graphic on how to pack with lots of useful information.

3D chef gives diners the Edge

3D chef gives diners the Edge

The lid’s been lifted on the premium dining venues guests can expect when Celebrity Edge launches in November – in one, an animated chef appears on the table, plating up a virtual meal.

Celebrity Cruises served a taster to whet appetites at a swanky preview in New York, unveiling a stable of 29 restaurants, cafes and bars. The Dinner on the Edge restaurant occupies the Magic Carpet, the remarkable moveable space cantilevered off the ship’s side.

Perhaps most intriguing is Le Grand Bistro, which projects Le Petit Chef, a 3D character no bigger than a salt shaker, who assembles a digital meal on the guest’s plate, previewing the actual food.

“We were looking for something really unique,” said Brian Abel, Celebrity’s vice-president of hotel operations. “We’re trying to be innovative with technology… to enhance the guest experience.”

The high-tech culinary experience joins Dinner on the Edge, the venue on the cantilevered Magic Carpet when positioned atop the ship, the multi-storey Eden restaurant and Eden Bar.

“The culinary pillar is really the first among equals,” said Richard D. Fain, CEO of Celebrity’s parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Rather than a main dining room, Celebrity Edge will have French, Italian, Greek/Mediterranean and American-themed venues, reflecting passengers increasingly choosing “select dining” in the restaurants reserved for those cabin classes.

“Guests seem to like smaller dining room experiences,” Abel said.

Alongside Beyond Eden, Le Grand Bistro and Dinner on the Edge are steakhouse, barbecue and seafood venues.

Record number of Aussies book North West Passage

Record number of Aussies book North West Passage

Luxury expedition line Ponant launched its 2020 North West Passage cruise on Thursday – and by lunchtime, 60 per cent of the ship’s cabins had been snapped up by Australians.

In an astonishing result which underscores that passengers are now reserving cabins earlier and earlier.  The amazing journey in a Prestige Stateroom with private balcony, based on a double occupancy  costs from A$36,590pp .

The  22-night expedition aboard L’Austral, departs on  24 August 2020 from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland,  and goes to Nome, Alaska,  crossing the Arctic Circle enroute

Expedition leaders Nicholas Dubreuil says of the trip: : “On last year’s voyage I counted 33 polar bear sightings –  quite extraordinary.”

The small-ship French line is quickly establishing itself as a world leader in expedition cruising.

They have four new ships on order, and L’Austral will be in Australia at the end of the year with a host of new itineraries.

The line is proudest of its world’s first electric hybrid Icebreaker, to be launched in 2021.

The new generation Icebreaker will be able to cut through 2.5 metres of moving ice at three knots, and take passengers to previously inaccessible places including the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea and Peter I Islands.

Designed for extreme destinations, the 135-cabin Icebreaker will have 16 zodiacs, two helicopters and one of the world’s most experienced expedition leaders in Mr Dubreuil, who will accompany the ship on every sailing.

“The Icebreaker is the result of 30 years of experience in expedition cruising,’’ Mr Dubreuil said. “It will take passengers to remote areas visited by very few people – less than the number of people who have been to the moon.’’

The extreme Polar expedition exploration vessel will be able to reach the true North Pole at 90 degrees latitude North, cross the Arctic Ocean and discover the extreme North East Greenland – “previously an inaccessible dream”, Mr Dubreuil said.

It will be one of the most environmentally friendly ships sailing the seas and will be the first hybrid electric Icebreaker powered by Liquefied Natural Gas. It will produce no emissions.

Mr Dubreuil who has crossed the poles by kayak, sleigh and skis said that sea ice is always moving, changing, breaking and melting.

“We have to manage the ice. Our itineraries will offer scenic helicopter rides to take passengers to experience the real Greenland and see the mountain summits. Guests will also be able to take part in dog sledging and snowshoeing.’’

As Sarina Bratton, Ponant’s chair Asia Pacific said: “Our expeditions set us apart from other operators because of leaders like Nick Dubreuil.”
