- Four people and three dogs were rescued by Carnival Splendor.
- Their catamaran suffered engine failure and was drifting off New Caledonia.
- Everyone is thankfully ok.
The Carnival Splendor has come to the rescue of four people and three dogs after their catamaran suffered engine failure and was left floating in the waters of the South Pacific.
Carnival Splendor was sailing south of New Caledonia when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Noumea informed them of the distress call.
Carnival Splendor immediately headed towards the location and was able to rescue the group.
“They were stranded on their catamaran, and there were rough seas out in the South Pacific overnight,” said Lynne Scrivens, the Communications Director for Carnival Corporation, told 2GB’s Mark Levy.
“Their catamaran suffered engine failure just outside New Caledonia, so Carnival Splendor, the Sydney-based cruise ship, got the call to go and assist.
“It immediately diverted and headed towards where the catamaran was. Thankfully, we were able to get them and rescue the four people and their three dogs.
“They are now on the Carnival Splendor along with 3300 other guests.”
The four people and their pooches began their journey on May 14 from the Gold Coast, and were intended to sail towards Fiji.
There were two Australians, one German, and one Italian onboard.
“They are all ok thankfully, their catamaran was drifting in those rough seas, and they were really lucky we were able to come to their rescue.
“They are receiving food and water, and are resting in one of the cabins. They were looked over by our medical team, but they are all ok.”
