Awkward timing – couple misses cruise as crew wave goodbye with giant hand

It’s a story that is our biggest nightmare – missing our cruise ship.

And it’s happened to another couple who missed their ship, Freedom of the Seas.

A new video which has been posted on Facebook, shows the couple narrowly missing the ship as she pulls away from port.

Passengers on another ship can be heard, yelling and shouting, “you missed it”, while whistling and cheering as the annoyed looking couple are escorted by one of the port workers off the pier.

The video also captures one of the crew members from the bridge, waving a giant hand sign which has ‘bye’ plastered on the palm.

While it might seem as a hilarious taunt at the late passengers, the sign was pulled out for the bystanders on the pier and passengers on the other ship – just awkward timing for sure.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Cruise Passenger: “Our crew member was not directing her wave to our guests on the pier.  She was waving at our sister ship, Anthem of the Seas, which was also in port and scheduled for departure. The gesture was one of respect and nautical camaraderie between crew members. We regret the inconvenience our guests experienced due the late return to the pier. Guests are encouraged to be back by all-aboard time. Departure times are routinely announced onboard, posted in shipboard newsletters and at gangways to keep our guests informed at all ports of call.”

  1. I have gone on a number of cruises out of both Sydney and Brisbane and I have one out of Brisbane in January. I always go the day before and stay a night in a hotel to avoid and stress or risk of missing the embarkation time of the cruise. I consider the extra cost of the hotel as part of the holiday and an opportunity to enjoy the relevant city. Otherwise as I often travel with Princess cruises I will fly on the guaranteed flight through Princess so that if late they will fly you to the next port to board the ship. I think the risk of missing departure time on a cruise is a considerable risk if you are flying in on a flight to just get there in time. I don’t think it is fair to blame the captain for departing on time. I think captains of cruise liners must be fed up with those passengers on every port who don’t get back on time and either delay departure or are left behind. If you consider the cost of a ship having to catch up time on a cruise to the next port due to late departure it can be a lot of extra cost to speed up the ship as more fuel is needed. I would encourage cruisers to add the extra day for an overnight stay to make certain that they board on time or get a really early flight. Even then that can be a problem if the airport is snowed out or there is fog that caused planed to be delayed. I recon get there the day before and relax.

  2. We also missed the Legend of the Seas in Sydney. Flight delays from Brisbane had us arriving in Sydney just an hour before sailing, and although we were at the wharf by 4.15pm, we were told the gate was closed and the Captain was denying us and other passengers on same flight, boarding. Immigration officials said they would be happy to process us, but to no avail. We had even rung the wharf to say we would be late as a friend was there to see us off and she informed RCI. We had just one small bag which we could have carried on board and fitted through the Xray. But no, the Captain said no, so we watched the ship leave, then an almighty storm hit Sydney!! One other couple were very upset as had booked over 9 months before, got holidays, and could not go later as lady was pregnant and soon unable to travel. Fortunately our Insurance covered our loss and the airline allowed us to go change our flight to go home without penalty. We are very frequent travellers with RCI and I now squeeze everything I can out of them.
