Trying to convince the kids to leave behind their Xbox console for a family holiday on board a cruise ship can be pretty tough.

It can often result in tears, tantrums and worst-case scenario the silence treatment.

But when the holiday involves a water coaster, 50s diner and rock climbing – it can make the convincing part a whole lot easier.

Which is why we’ve put together a list of top nine cruise ships we think your kids will love.

Disney Dream

Who better to entertain the kids than Mickey, Minnie and Goofy.

It’s one big fairytale on board a Disney Cruise Lines ship, but the Disney Dream is a particular treat for both adults and children.

They will love:

+ The AquaDuck water coaster on deck 12 – it’s the ride with a view as it travels 765 feet through an acrylic tube that hangs off the side of the ship. It goes down four decks before splashing out into a lazy river. It’s a quick ride but it’ll keep the entire family entertained during sea days.

+ Kids-only pools means the young ones can splash around with friends in shallow waters. The ship has Mickey’s Pool, which is located on deck 11 and is shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head; and the Nemo Reef located next to it which features fountains, bubblers, pop jets and characters from Disney and Pixar’s Finding Nemo.

+ Disney characters make regular appearance during cruises. Among them are Mickey Mouse; Minnie Mouse; Donald Duck; Daisy Duck; Chip & Dale; Goofy; Pluto; Max; Captain Hook; Peter Pan; Lilo; Stitch; Cinderella; Belle; Snow White; Princess Aurora; Princess Tiana; Ariel; Captain Jack Sparrow; Dopey; and Jake.

+ New Disney stories have also been designed specifically for the cruises including Disney’s Believe – a musical of a workaholic father who is reconnected with his daughter. It features new characters as well as old favourites like Mary Poppins, Cinderella, Peter Pan and Princess Tiana. There’s also Villains Tonight starring Disney’s beloved villains including Ursula from The Little Mermaid and Captain Hook from Peter Pan.

The ship has a D-Lounge, which is a family nightclub on deck four where the whole family can get together for a night of games and entertainment.

There’s also age-friendly group activities like the Disney Oceaneer Club for 3-12 year olds; Forward Funnel for 11-14 year olds and Vibe for 14-17 year olds.

So, it’s no surprise Norwegian’s two newest ships and the first two in the Breakaway-class of ships is perfect for the kids.
