Luxurious Crystal Bach christened and on its inaugural sailings

Luxurious Crystal Bach christened and on its inaugural sailings

Crystal River Cruises has launched its latest ship, theย Crystal Bach.

Christened by the famous soprano vocalist, Anna-Maria Kaufmann who is the Godmother of the ship, theย Crystal Bachย embarked on her maiden voyage from Amsterdam last week.

Crystal River Cruises has also just released new photos of the interior of this spectacular ship.

โ€œIt is an honor to have one of Germanyโ€™s most gifted and cherished talents christenย Crystalย Bachย as she officially embarks on the Rhine as part of the award-winningย Crystalย fleet,โ€ saysย Crystalย CEO and president, Edie Rodriguez. โ€œNaturally, Anna-Mariaโ€™s remarkable career in classical music and passion for her chosen homeland are apropos for this stunning ship, but beyond that, her grace and internationally recognisable charm are representative of the elegance found aboard aย Crystalย river voyage.โ€

Crystalย Bachย is the first of fourย Crystalย โ€œRhine Classโ€ river ships to debut on the rivers of Europe, joiningย Crystalย Mozart as part of theย Crystalย River Cruises fleet recently named โ€œWorldโ€™s Best River Cruise Lineโ€ byย Travel + Leisure.

Sailing 10- and 14-day voyages predominantly along the Rhine River, she will call in medieval towns and modern hubs in Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany.

Crystalโ€™s โ€œRhine Classโ€ river ships are the river cruising industryโ€™s first and only all-balcony, all-suite vessels in Europe.

All four river ships will offerย Crystalโ€™s acclaimed butler service in every room category, king-sized beds, Panoramic Balcony-Windows, walk-in closets and dual vanity in the bathrooms in most categories, ETRO robes and slippers, wall-mounted flat-screen HD TVs, and Nespresso machines.

Additional features includeย Crystalโ€™s farm-to-table, Michelin-inspired cuisine in multiple, open-seating eateries: the elegant Waterside Restaurant, namesake Bistro cafรฉs and the exclusive optional Vintage Room; and the Palm Court.

Ovation of the Seas versus Majestic Princess

Ovation of the Seas versus Majestic Princess

Itโ€™s been billed as the battle of the big ships. In 2018, Australia will have two newly built mega liners โ€“ and Cruise Passenger has road-tested both.

Next September, Sydneyโ€™s newest and biggest premium ship will sail triumphantly into the harbour.

Majestic Princess will be just 17 months old, and her arrival will rejuvenate the Premium class with fantastic Michelin-starred dining and the biggest fashion mall at sea.

Eight weeks later, the ship some say will be her biggest competitor, Royal Caribbeanโ€™s Quantum class Ovation of the Seas โ€“ choc full of the latest technological gadgets like robot barmen, iFly simulators and luxurious sky loft suites – will tie up at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

So which one will win Sydneyโ€™s heart?

Majestic Princess is causing a stir because she has many of the attributes of a luxury ships – without the steep price tag.

She is proudly premium โ€“ but with great food, big musical shows for entertainment, a huge spa called The Enclave and specially designed luxury beds.

Her 1,000 square metres of shopping mall is home to Prada, Couch, Cartier, Gucci,ย  Bulgariโ€ฆthe list goes on.

She takes 3,600 passengers on 19 decks. For the premium Class, she is a game changer.

But Ovation of the Seas is a game changer, too. She is supposed to be in the โ€œcontemporaryโ€ class of ships, but in reality she is pushing into Premium.

She carries 4,905 passengers, has 18 dining options including a Jamie Oliver and a gastronomic restaurant called Wonderland.

But the biggest ticks for the Ovation โ€“ especially among those with kids –ย  is ripcord by iFly, a sky dive simulator, a circus school and dodgem cars.

Our verdict

Both these ships represent the best in new-style cruising โ€“ great food, terrific places to see and entertainment and activities you wonโ€™t find anywhere else. You canโ€™t beat the value.

If youโ€™re a couple and love to relax on a sophisticated and luxurious vessel, go for the Majestic Princess.ย  No-one does New Zealand like Princess, for instance, and theyโ€™ve just started immersive food and cultural cruises across the ditch that sound fabulous.

But if you have kids, the Ovation of the Seas is hard to beat for fun and value.
