Roman philosopher Seneca once said, “voyage, travel, and change of place impart vigour.” The man who tutored Julius Caesar knew a thing or two about travelling.

Regent Seven Seas Voyager’s 11-night cruise around the cities and towns of the Adriatic might have been made for him.

Rich in history, the cruise is designed for an intimate experience so you feel like you’re a local walking the cobbled streets of Barcelona or sipping on an aperitif in Sorrento.

The cruise departs from Monaco in Monte Carlo, a tiny country with its own royal family ruled by HSH Prince Albert II, son of the fabled actress turned princess Grace Kelly.

It’s one of Europe’s most enchanting places, filled with well-preserved Roman architecture juxtaposed with gleaming yachts and luxury cars.

The voyage takes you next to Marseille, the southern port city in France, where you can dine on a local hero – the bouillabaisse, a rich tomato-based seafood stew. The lively city is a far cry from the sleepy villages that inspired Cezanne’s paintings and is now a buzzing and cosmopolitan metropolis.

Next port on this journey is, Barcelona, known as the home of Gaudi, the famous post-modernist Spanish architect. The city is visually stunning and eccentric, filled with eclectic buildings. Gaudi’s influence can be seen throughout the city and places like Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Guell and Casa Milla are some of his best known works.

One of the highlights onboard Regent Seven Seas Cruises, The World’s Most Luxurious Fleet, is the hallmark of inclusion with the only cruise line to offer free shore excursions in every port and among many highlights of this sailing in Barcelona is an opportunity to wander the revitalised El Raval neighbourhood before visiting the Fabrica Moritz microbrewery where visitors can sample craft beers and tapas.

The all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Voyager then takes you to Palma de Mallorca, a wind-swept island with steep jagged cliffs. The island is home to olive groves more than a thousand years old. The rocky valleys and sleepy villages are shrouded in vibrant pink bougainvillea with sweeping views.

Once you reach the ancient city of Rome, you can feast on the historical and architectural glory of St Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Coliseum as well as the renowned Trevi Fountain.

Continuing the cruise in Italy, the Seven Seas Voyager will arrive in Sorrento, one of our favourites and possibly the most beautiful town in Europe. Overlooking the bay of Naples, it’s perched on the cliff tops. Not to be missed is the idyllic island of Capri. A short boatride from Sorrento, Capri is the home of the Blue Grotto, a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue. And don’t forget its designer fashion and tangy and punchy limoncello drink.

On to Croatia and Split, the largest Croatian city on the Adriatic Coast. It’s imposing fortress-like complex is at the centre of the city and was erected by the Roman emperor in the 4th century, so this city is rich with history. The Cathedral of St. Duju is built on an ancient shrine, believed to be the oldest in the world.

The Seven Seas Voyager then sails to Koper, the town filled with red tiled roofs. There are lots of Venetian-inspired influences in the architecture, like the Praetorian Palace and the Gothic-style loggia.

The final stop on this epic journey is Venice, where you will spend an evening in port. The City of Canals was built on an archipelago of more than 100 island formed by 150 canals. And the ancient cobblestone streets are lined with tiny workshops, boutiques, cafes as well as colourful markets.

The city is filled with museums and art galleries showcasing masterpieces of 20th century art and works from the avant-garde movements.

While you might be visiting some of the most sought-after places in the world, the grand Seven Seas Voyager is also a destination itself.

Every bit of a Regent Seven Seas experience onboard is curated and well-thought out. During sea days, there are activities like afternoon tea hosted by an expert lecturer, bocce ball games and trivia, to name a few.

Part of the immersive experience of a Regent Seven Seas voyage, where every luxury is included, is the cuisine. At the La Veranda restaurant, guests find regional specialties which reflect the countries that the ship visits. Prime 7, the classic steakhouse and one of the flagship restaurants aboard the Regent Seven Seas fleet is handsomely decorated to mimic a classic American steakhouse. Here you’ll dine on steak dishes presented with a modern flair. Chartreuse features a modern French menu and evokes memories of a chic Parisian fine dining restaurant.
