As travellers search for places to visit that are off the beaten track, South America is rising as an attractive,e new destination.

Weaving through Brazil, Peru, and Colombia onboard a luxury river cruise along the Amazon River, you can see why cruising is becoming so popular in these parts.

More river cruise companies are adding the Amazon River to their itineraries proving it is an emerging destination, but also the best way to explore this largely uncharted territory.

Why visit Peru?

Peru is home to a spectacular stretch of the Amazon Rainforest, including the birthplace of the Amazon River as well as the world heritage Machu Picchu. From its colourful capital city of Lima, also known as the “City of Kings”, to Cusco, the heartland of the Inka Empire.

While the Amazon Rainforest spans nine countries, it is said the most beautiful stretch is in Peru due to its strictly protected zone that keeps deforestation out of the Peruvian Amazon.

Home to over 30% of the world’s known animal species including Amazonian manatees, three-toed sloths, capybara, pink river dolphins, scarlet macaw, and spider monkeys.

There are sights to see everywhere you turn in Peru. Its most well-known drawcard is Machu Picchu of course, but also the Sacred Valley of the Inkas. Besides the lush Amazon Rainforest, the capital, Lima, also provides visitors with memorable experiences.

Known as the “City of Kings,” Lima was founded in 1535. The bustling city has something for everyone, from history to culture, as well as a number of Peruvian gastronomical delights you won’t find anywhere else.

According to Uniworld, weather in the Peruvian Amazon can be divided into two main seasons. If you choose to visit during the High-Water season (December through May), you’ll find yourself closer to the treetops and might catch a view of more native animals that make their homes there. Alternatively, the Low-Water season (June through November) gives access to jungle paths that are inaccessible at other times of the year.
