Viking reveals new river itineraries in Europe and South America

Viking has revealed a number of new itineraries, for the 2022 river cruise season including new European and South American voyages.

The line, which earlier this year, announced it would be starting sailings on the Mississippi River, also has a new 10-day Christmas sailing from Berlin to Prague.

The itinerary, will of course, include visits to the wonderful Christmas markets of Germany and the Czech Republic.

Starting in Berlin, the capital of Germany has the historical Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market which is known for its glassblowers and winter delicacies. The city also boasts the nostalgic market at the Opnerpalis which has an impressive array of artisans, amusement rides as well as traditional German Christmas treats like roasted almonds.

The voyage then continues to places like Potsdam, the home to the Prussian empire, the wine villages of Meissen as well as Saxon Switzerland near the Elbsandstein Mountains.

The cruise finishes in Prague where you will have three nights to explore the city, rich with Romanesque, Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings.

Another exciting addition to Vikingโ€™s sailings includes a voyage in South America, cruising parts of the Amazon River onboard Viking’s small ocean ship, the Viking Sun

Michelle Black, Vikingโ€™s Managing Director ANZ said she was pleased to be able to open select 2022 voyages and provide more choice for travellers.

โ€œWe continue to work hard to support our guests and staff during these turbulent times. But weโ€™re also looking ahead to a future when our travel dreams once again become reality,โ€ she said.

โ€œWeโ€™re busy building new ships, creating new itineraries and planning new on-shore experiences, so that when you are ready to travel once more, youโ€™ll have more choice than ever.

โ€œTogether with Vikingโ€™s risk-free booking guarantee, the ability to plan ahead into 2022 provides added peace of mind.โ€ she concluded.

In 2022, Viking also pledged it would start sailing the Mississippi River, and the line says by 2027, it will have six ships in America.

The newย Viking Mississippiย will take the design and comfort of Americanโ€™s river journeys up a notch.

The ship will be able to host 386 passengers in 193 staterooms. The newย Viking Mississippiย will be designed in the lineโ€™s signature Scandinavian style and will include some of the signature public spaces like the Aquavit Terrace, the Explorersโ€™ Lounge & The Bow and more.

The vessel will sail voyages on the Lower and Upper Mississippi between New Orleans and St Paul. The scheduled ports of call will include seven US states including Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The vessels will be built by American shipyard Edison Chouest, an American company, as laws require river vessels to be built in the US.

  1. Cruise all you like. But, there wonโ€™t be any European Christmas Markets open for 2020. Social distancing will remain in place everywhere, including throughout Europe until 2021.
