For nearly 400 years, the Passion Play has performed once every 10 years and Viking has been operating these popular itineraries on the Rhine since 2010.
In 2030, Viking will be offering special voyages to experience the Passion Play with departure dates from May to September. Guests will have preferred seating at the Passion Play performance. As they sail on Viking’s longships, they will also be able to explore Bavaria and other amazing historical destinations along the Rhine and Danube rivers.

Highlights of the new Oberammergau Passion Play itineraries in 2030.
Oberammergau, Innsbruck and the Rhine. Viking is offering a 13-day itinerary from Amsterdam to Munich on the Rhine calling at UNESCO World Heritage Sites lined with castles, cathedrals and medieval towns. Guests will be able to savour the culinary traditions of the Alsace region as they sail to Cologne, Koblenz, Rudesheim, Speyer, Strasbourg and Basel. After breakfast, guests will disembark the longship and transfer to Innsbruck, known for its dramatic landscapes surrounded by towering mountains.
The next day, they will transfer to Oberammergau with its scenic alpine valley setting in southern Bavaria. This quaint village is best known for its production of the Passion Play which tells the story of the trial and death of Jesus Christ. It is a credit to the local residents to produce this powerful performance.
The next day, they will transfer to Munich and spend a day exploring Germany’s centre of culture and famous beer gardens where they can taste a stein or two while listening to the oompah music.

Oberammergau and Salzburg. Viking has a 12-day itinerary from Oberammergau to Budapest which sails through the heart of Central Europe. Your holiday starts with watching the Passion Play in the quaint village of Oberammergau in southern Bavaria where the locals have been organising the dramatic performance for many years.
You will then transfer to Salzburg, a beautiful city in Austria known for its high baroque architectural buildings. Its sweeping alpine surroundings are the perfect background for the film Sound of Music based on the true story of the von Trapp family of singers and their escape from Nazi-occupied Austria. Salzburg is also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the city’s most celebrated son who started composing at the age of five. Beyond Salzburg’s musical legacy, lies a city of narrow lanes, skilled craftsmanship and 300-year-old coffeehouse culture. Stop and sip a cup of coffee at Café Tomaselli or Café Bazar, once the gathering place for local intellectuals and artists.
The cruise on Viking Tor will then sail to Passau, known for its ornately decorated cathedral. You can also taste its famous Bavarian cheeses, hams and sausages.
The next day you will visit Linz in Austria and experience the scenery of the picturesque Wachau Valley. Make sure you make time to visit the local vineyards.
