The long holiday: how Aussies are booking much more than just a river cruise in Europe

Journalist,
  • Travellers are seeking more time away with pre and post-cruise holidays.
  • River cruise lines are moving to offer guests more extensions.
  • European capitals are topping the list for destinations before and after the cruise.

Top river cruise lines are combining land holidays with their river itineraries, as travellers seek longer, more immersive stays. With everything from hotel bookings to transfers, tours and even niche local experiences, there’s little these cruise lines won’t do with these new offerings to ensure your entire journey is taken care of by them in one bundle.

Avalon Waterways is pairing up with sister brand Globus to offer more land-river offerings and other top lines are either crafting their own land tours or relying on sister companies to provide guided land tour packages.

For some lines, the combined itineraries are nothing new. Riviera Travel has offered escorted touring with river cruises as both a tour operator and a river cruise line. But with rising demand for more immersive itineraries, this has prompted Riviera to further increase their portfolio of river-and-land combinations.

Here’s a look at what each of the key lines has to offer and why they are increasing their itineraries beyond the ship.

What travellers want

Avalon Waterways says there’s a definite desire for their guests to book pre and post cruise stays. For their guests, whatever the type of trip, travellers are looking to make the most of their time on holidays, and when it comes to river cruises, these are increasingly viewed as the centrepiece of a broader journey rather than a standalone experience. Avalon says the cruise itself is becoming less about a single trip and more about making the most of being in a destination, extending the experience and diving a little deeper into the local culture.

APT agrees the demand is there and their itineraries have been designed to reflect it. “We’ve moved well beyond the traditional city stay although those do remain popular. Today a guest might spend a few days in Prague before joining a Magnificent Europe departure or extend through Ireland on the back end. In Asia, guests regularly extend in Hanoi, Siem Reap, or Kolkata all cities with enough depth to reward several days on their own.”

AmaWaterways says “Absolutely. More guests are looking to extend their holidays before or after their river cruise, particularly Australians travelling long haul to Europe, Asia and Africa. River cruising has increasingly become part of a broader travel experience rather than simply a standalone holiday, and guests want to maximise their time away by immersing themselves more deeply in the destinations they are visiting.

“Weโ€™re seeing strong interest from travellers who want to slow down, spend additional time exploring iconic cities, enjoy local cuisine, culture and history, and settle into the rhythm of a destination before or after their cruise experience.”

Why we want more

When it comes to understanding why people seek extended travel, Avalon Waterways says there are plenty of things at play, with a fair bit of unpredictability. When it comes to long-haul flights, potential flight delays or disruptions must be considered. Longer trips take the stress out of the journey.

Avalon says that because of this, many prefer a โ€œType Aโ€ mindset, building in extra time to allow for last-minute changes, peace of mind and a smoother start or finish to their holiday.

Avalon says: “Whatโ€™s more is that, for long-haul travellers, particularly for us in Australia, we have the mammoth time difference to contend with, so allowing that extra bit of time to adjust to time zones and enjoy the destinations makes it even more worthwhile to stay longer.

“Thereโ€™s also a strong desire to truly immerse themselves in a destination or a niche local activity โ€“ beyond what can be experienced during the cruise itself. Most importantly, though, weโ€™ve found that guests really value the seamless transition between land and cruise, which a well-planned pre or post-night stay provides. It takes the stress away and leaves guests to enjoy their trip from start to finish.”

For APT, the hassle-free nature of river cruising converts people. They say “that’s the best way to describe it. Guests finish a trip having had such a remarkable experience that they want more of it: more time in destination, more countries, more of what made the trip so good in the first place. When you’ve also travelled from Australia to get somewhere, extending just makes sense. The pre and post-program answers that directly. It all connects and everything is taken care of so guests don’t have to coordinate between operators or work out how the pieces fit. They just have to show up.”

AmaWaterways says acclimatisation is also a major draw card for their guests. “For Australian travellers especially, getting to Europe or Asia is a significant journey, so people naturally want to make the most of being there. Adding extra nights before or after a cruise allows guests to adjust to the time zone, recover from long flights and begin their holiday feeling relaxed rather than rushed.

“Thereโ€™s also a growing desire for more meaningful and immersive travel experiences. Guests want time to wander through cities, discover neighbourhood restaurants, visit museums or enjoy experiences they may not otherwise fit into the cruise itinerary itself.

For AmaWaterways, convenience is another major factor. Guests increasingly value having everything organised for them โ€” accommodation, transfers, touring and logistics โ€” so they can simply enjoy the journey without the stress of coordinating separate arrangements themselves.”

Avalon Waterways says guest preferences on destinations vary from time to time, but a lot of interest comes from those looking to spend extra time in some of Europeโ€™s most captivating capitals. For Avalon, some favourites include the Danube Dreams with Prague, Vida Portugal with Lisbon or The Danube from Romania to Budapest with Bucharest.

“These particular itineraries tend to work well because they naturally complement the cruise experiences โ€“ adding new layers to the trip without feeling rushed.”

For APT, in Europe, Switzerland is one of their strongest performers. Interestingly, it’s not all about disembarking the ship and booking straight into one hotel. Land journeys are also on the rise, including rail travel. “The Travelmarvel Rail Journeys through Scotland, Switzerland, and Scandinavia have had a strong reception since launch and pair naturally with our European river program. Ireland is also consistently popular across both brands. The combination of natural beauty and history resonates strongly, and it holds up well as either a standalone extension or a bridge between experiences.

APT also says: “In Asia, it follows the routing. Our Ho Chi Minh Beach Break is very popular; in China, Chongqing and Yichang are the natural departure points for our Yangtze itineraries, and with the high-speed rail network, Beijing and Shanghai are realistic add-ons from there. Kolkata is the natural extension for our Ganges program, and it consistently surprises guests as it tends to exceed expectations every time.”

AmaWaterways says: “In Europe, cities such as Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, Paris and Zurich continue to be incredibly popular for pre and post-cruise extensions, particularly alongside Danube and Rhine itineraries.

“Guests travelling on our Mekong itineraries often extend their stays in destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Siem Reap and Bangkok to experience more of Southeast Asiaโ€™s culture, cuisine and history.

“Weโ€™re also seeing growing interest in combining river cruising with broader land experiences, whether thatโ€™s spending extra time in wine regions, exploring smaller towns or adding rail journeys and luxury hotel stays into the overall itinerary.

Avalon says they have options now being offered all across the world. “Yes, pre and post-cruise extensions are something we offer across many of our itineraries. Whether itโ€™s Europe, Asia or beyond, the aim is always to enhance the cruise experience, connecting guests with the wider destination so it feels like a natural continuation rather than an add-on.”

APT says there are global destinations on offer. “Yes. Europe drives the volume, but the program goes well beyond it. Rail journeys across Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are popular. City stay extensions across our Asian routing are also. Wherever the cruise takes a guest, there’s something we can build around it.”

AmaWaterways also says: “Yes, AmaWaterways offers pre and post-cruise land packages across many of our destinations globally. Whether guests are travelling through Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa or South America, the aim is to create a seamless extension of the cruise experience that feels effortless and enriching.

“These extensions are carefully designed to complement the cruise itself, allowing guests to gain a deeper appreciation of the destinations they are visiting while maintaining the same level of comfort and service they experience onboard.”

How hard is it?

Avalon says “Pre or post-cruise stays are designed to be as seamless and stress-free as possible. Stays typically include handpicked hotel accommodation that is carefully selected and centrally located, complementing the cruise. If flights are booked in with a cruise with Avalon, the transfers are also included, making it a one-stop shop for travel!”

APT says it depends on what the guest wants. “A city stay is flexible and relaxed, a curated choice of activities, time to explore at their own pace. In Asia particularly, that time helps guests adjust to the climate and time zone before the cruise begins, and it can make a real difference to how the first few days on board feel.

“A land tour or rail journey goes deeper. The Travelmarvel Rail Journeys take guests through some of Europe’s most scenic corridors. Switzerland, Scotland, Scandinavia with accommodation, meals, transfers, and an expert Tour Director to make it easy.

“And both the APT and Travelmarvel Small Group tours offer a more intimate experience, with the kind of access and local knowledge a larger group tour simply can’t deliver. A Sicily and Malta extension after a European river cruise, for example, adds a completely different texture to the trip and guests come home feeling like they’ve genuinely made the most of the journey.”

AmaWaterways says: “Our land packages are designed to be completely seamless and stress-free. Typically, they include centrally located premium hotel accommodation, guided sightseeing, transfers and the services of experienced local guides or Cruise Managers.

“Depending on the destination, guests may enjoy city tours, cultural experiences, culinary activities or additional regional exploration. The idea is to create a natural continuation of the journey, where guests can relax and enjoy more time in the destination knowing every detail has been taken care of.”
