Major lines make dramatic changes to cancellation policies to win cruisers back

It’s a thorny issue – and one that is holding up long-term bookings for many cruise lines. You want to take advantage of a bargain price – but what happens if circumstances change?

In today’s world of travel, something just might.

Some cruise lines are being sympathetic. Others not quite so helpful. The trouble is, they really need your money as cash flow is crucial to survival. So who is doing what?  It’s a mixed bag.

One of the most candid and honest comments came from Richard Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean.

“Our previous policy set earlier deadlines for guests to cancel their cruises, and that added unnecessary stress. Trying to guess a month or more in advance where areas of concern about coronavirus might be is challenging for medical experts, much less a family preparing for vacation.

“When circumstances are as fast-changing as they have been recently, it’s good to know you have the option to take a rain check. We think putting more control in our guests’ hands helps them make informed decisions about whether to keep their existing vacation plans or trade out for a more convenient time or itinerary.”

He added the policy would also give consumers more confidence in making new bookings, knowing that they could later adjust their plans without penalty.

Viking was first to announce a bold change to its cancellation policy this week, allowing guests to postpone their cruise up to 24-hours before departure. They get a cruise credit for up to two years – a move designed to provide peace of mind.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Azamara and Silversea have announced to guests a joint policy. The “Cruise With Confidence” policy allows guests to cancel up to 48 hours before a sailing. They will receive a full credit for their fare, usable on any future sailing of the guest’s choice in 2020 or 2021. The policy applies to both new and existing cruise bookings.

The policy applies to all cruises with a sailing date on or before July 31, 2020,

Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas is also offering guests to cancel up to 48 prior to cruise departure and receive a Future Cruise Credit equal to 100 per cent of the cruise fare paid, to be redeemed one year from date of issue for travel no later than 2022.

Holland America Line and Seabourn also switched, allowing guests to cancel up to 30 days before sailing and receive a future cruise credit valid for 90 days. This means guests would need to make a re-booking on another cruise within three months, departing in 2021 at the very latest.

Norwegian Cruise Lines, meanwhile, is allowing guests to cancel up to 48 hours from embarkation and receive a 100% future cruise credit to be used for sailings that embark through December 31, 2022.

Crystal Cruises is allowing guests booked on 2020 Ocean, River, Yacht and Expedition Voyages to cancel up to seven days prior to first service and receive a 100% credit for cruise fare monies paid that may be redeemed on any future voyage through the end of 2022.

The line is also offering reduced deposit for new bookings for 2020 voyages and new final payment policy for existing and new bookings.

Cruise & Maritime Voyages is allowing guests to transfer all monies paid on existing bookings to another cruise departing in 2020 or 2021 and waive all administrative fees if they meet certain criteria.

Cunard is offering all guests with existing and new bookings on sailings departing before August 31, 2020 to transfer their booking up to 48 hours prior to departure.

Princess Cruises has faced some criticism for holding passengers to their bookings on the Diamond Princess, recently involved in an outbreak of coronavirus in Japan.

But the line has released an updated cancellation policy allowing cancellations up to 72 hours before sailing without penalty for cruises departing through May 31, 2020.

Hurtigruten is offering free rebooking to any future Hurtigruten cruise for all guests booked on departures between March 12 and June 30, 2020.

Carnival Australia has also released a set of new cancellation policies for guests who have booked before March 11, 2020 on sailings up to September 2020.

Ponant has announced relaxed cancellation policies for any new bookings.

MSC Cruises has made two revisions to its original policy and it now “depends on when and where our guests are sailing”.

Here are more details on what the lines are doing:

Travellers who make new bookings on sailings departing between 1 June and 31 December 2020, will be able to cancel until just 30 days prior to departure, paying only a customary administrative fee on the cruise fare. Additionally, Silversea will negotiate on guests’ behalf for the same cancellation options on other components of the booking such as air travel, hotels and shore excursions. However, Silversea does not have control over these third-party suppliers, and, therefore, different terms may apply for these specific components.

“Travelling the world with Silversea should never be a source of anxiety,” says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s Chief Executive Officer. “For this reason, and to ease the minds of our guests and trade partners, we have temporarily relaxed our new booking and cancellation policies. This period of uncertainty is for sure going to ease eventually, but as the situation evolves, we are pleased to provide our guests with more time to decide whether or not to travel.”

MSC Cruises

The line previously announced: “MSC Cruises has tweaked its cancellation policy to allow any passenger who is booked on a Mediterranean cruise in March and April 2020 to postpone their cruise or switch to a different one operating in another region and sailing within the next year.”

But this is now an outdated guideline which has since been updated, says Leisa Chell PR & Communications Manager of MSC Cruises.

“MSC Cruises updated cancellation policy will depend on when and where our guests are sailing and should contact their travel agent for the latest information,” says Ms Chell.

Hurtigruten

  1. MSC , A$ 350 deposit has been transferred to 2021. I do not plan to travel this particular year. I shall be given full refund of this deposit. I do not wish MSC to plan my holiday.

  2. Silly question but don’t the cruise liners / shipping companies have insurance?
We take out travel insurance when we travel so whats the point if it does not cover us?
We are a group of 12 people booked with MSC over a year ago, travelling from Australia to Europe via plane to do a 3 week cruise
Paid for everything including insurance prior to the pandemic sooooooooo please explain ?
On average we have spent over $5,000 plus per person
Based on the pandemic I wont be travelling in the next few years —- so a credit is of no value to me … we would like a full refund
Its all very well for these companies to change the rules but every countries legal system is different

  3. Very poor of P & O not to offer the same conditions as their sister company Princess.
I will not book with P & O ever again.

  4. Concerning that cruise lines are holding up paying out refunds for many weeks. It suggests to me that their liquidity is drying up. I have a $4000 deposit with Princess cruises with a balance to pay of $23000 in 4 weeks time. There is no way i will be paying that balance, with the industry looking so shaky. Will just have to accept the $4000 loss. Also booked on Cunard this Saturday leaving from Perth to Southampton. I’m worried that during that cruise, things are going to turn to custard by the time i reach England

  5. We have been booked with MSC for the Meditterainian cruise due to leave in April 2020. We have no information if it’s being cancelled .We wish they inform us what is go on on very frustrating.

  6. NO mention of Crystal cruises. I understand on a current World Cruise from Miami, N.Z and Australia passengers were offered a full refund if they disembarked in Sydney and abandoned their cruise to Rome?? Is that their business model?

  7. We booked a full Package Deal through Cruise 1st due to fly Perth to Singapore/Singapore to Bali for 5 days then Bali to Singapore to join our Asian Cruise with Royal Caribbean. After a lot of phone calls to Cruise 1st, Royal Caribbean & my Southerncross Insurace decided to cancel as being told the trip will still go ahead unless the cruise is cancelled. Nobody has looked at Indonesia to see the Coronavirus is in this country also & the company’s don’t care. I will be careful next time who I book with Very Disappointed with it all.

  8. We sailed fom Melbourne going to Singapoe on the Majestic but it was cancelled because of the Corona Virus we only went to Fremantle Australian and flew back to Melbourne. .We always have a wonderful time with Princess cruise because they look after us so well.I wanted to thank them for all the financial help with refunds and extra days in port at Fremantle so we could stay on the ship until our flights left it was so helpful. We had a great time listening and dancing to the band Evolution they were wonderful and hope they are on our next cruise in November.

  9. Cunard were outstanding in cancelling Asia travel in February providing full refunds and offering future discounts !
I am not sure why they are not mentioned here?

  10. I have always cruised with Princes Cruises . The attention when it comes to cleaning is outstanding and the crews on the ships need recognition for the high standard.
It is a shame that some passengers cant follow the hygiene standard and rules that are set onboard the ships.
I will continue to cruise with Princess Cruises.

  11. We have a cruise booked with CMV – Colombia – sailing from Singapore to Tilbury Docks on 3rd April. No mention made of CMV company. Where can I get information please?

  12. My wife and I have cruised with Princess, Royal Caribbean, Holland America and APT. On numerous occasions we have seen outbreaks of flu type illnesses and gastro intestinal sickness on board. We have never been infected by any outbreak of illness. We put it down to our strict personal hygiene in ensuring that we wash our hands thoroughly before eating or drinking and not using any of the public use rest rooms on board.

  13. Princess cruise lines have my trust as ive cruised with them many a time and cannot fault them on their hygiene standards which is excellent and so we will be sailing with them in 60 days regardless of the covid-19 virus thats affecting the globe with good faith they will continue to do everything possible for their guests.

  14. Anyone planning a cruise under the current situation with this virus is not fully taking responsibility for your health or of others. Stay home! You can travel later under safer conditions.

  15. I am booked on Norwegian Cruise line that leaves London at the end of May. We fly out of Los Angles to London and back. Everything is paid for, $6605.46 flight and cruise. If we cancel what am I to get back? Will my wife and I be safe to travel?

  16. You made no reference to Disney Cruises. I’ve got a very expressive cruise coming up with Disney in July. Any thoughts on that cruise line?

  17. I will never book Princess again!!! When I cancelled my fully paid Asian cruise they said it would be “up to ten business days” to receive our refunds. After waiting a few weeks and phoning again, I was told it would be another 8 weeks?!! Absolutely unacceptable. Need the funds to book something else for my 50th, absolutely disappointed and frustrated . And worried about their cash flow or what would happen to my $$ if they file for bankruptcy. If they can’t afford to refund my fares, what other corners are they cutting on ships?

  18. Hopefully Cunard will come up with a better deal than they are currently offering, for ther cancellation of our Japan cruise, and reassurance that their credit will arrive in time to reimburse us for the next cruise we are hoping to book.
However, not only cruise lines need to look at attracting us to re-book – airlines also need to look at what they are, or are not, offering.
I was looking at travelling Malaysian Airlines to UK, from Australia, later this year. Admittedly the flight I cancelled for Malaysia was not eligible for cancelling or changing, but I had a letter from my husband’s oncologist recommending not flying to Malaysia, because of coronavirus, and his low immunity.
All I will be refunded for this trip to Malaysia will be the tax on the fares, won’t even get back money paid for seat choices.
Needless to say, I won’t fly with Malaysia Airlines again. So there is a premium economy return flight Perth to UK that Malaysia Airlines misses out on; plus, if they had been a little more generous in crediting us, they would have got a possible rebooking fee; and Malaysia would have got three weeks’of our tourist dollars.

Interestingly, recently Virgin Airlines have given my husband full credit for a cancelled ticket when he needed an urgent operation. So who will we always travel from Perth to Sydney in future? – Virgin, of course!

  19. Princess cruises always offer best value for money. I have sailed previously and I will continue to sail on Princess without any doubt. Its an unfortunate situation the Corona virus the responsibility also lies upon each individual to follow hygienic protocols to ensure the spread of the disease.

  20. My fiancee and i will still go on cruise nothing will put us off.
The people who feel sick are the problem before they go on a cruise, they dont give a dam about any body else but them selfs.
They should be charged for putting other people life’s in danger.
If your sick before the cruise DON’T GO.

  21. I have always cruised on Princess Ships and have been impressed with the way the crew are always cleaning and disinfecting the ship.
Their attention to detail is reassuring. It is unfortunate what is happening around the world at the moment but I feel Princess do everything humanly possible to contain the situation.
It is a pity some passengers are not more attentive to their personal hygiene ministrations.
I will continue to cruise with Princess feeling confident that everything that can be done re health is being done.
