“It’s crazy, it’s chaos, no one knows what’s going on” – Cruisers left on shore in Hawaii as tsunami alarm sounded

  • Norewegian Cruise Line passengers were left on shore after being unable to board their ship in Hawaii.
  • The ship was ordered to leave port and float sail to a safe place after tsunami warnings sounded in the town, and only some passengers had enough time to get back onboard.
  • Those who didn’t make it were taken to high ground and slept overnight in a local high school according to emergency protocol and NCL picked up the passengers the following day.

Cruisers on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in Hawaii had to dramatically sprint to get back onto their cruise ship, as the tsunami alarm sounded throughout the town.

Hundreds missed out on being able to board the ship again, having to take shelter at a local high school before returning to the ship the next day.

A Tiktoker shared her perspective, as one of those people who always able to get onto the ship.

She explains: “We made it to the port, but the ship is leaving, and now we are going to higher ground and people are upset.

“It’s crazy, it’s chaos, no one knows what’s going on. We have family on the ship, they’re terrified for us.

“We did not expect this. People are crying. An employee is yelling people, this is crazy.”

In the video below we can see some of the opposing perspective, from someone who made it back onto the ship, and filmed the other passengers returning to their ship, stating that they had just slept at a local high school.

NCL shared with Abc News that when the tsunami warning sounded, the ship had to leave “immediately” per emergency protocol.

Guests were notified via SMS to “to seek higher ground and follow instructions from local authorities if they were unable to return to the ship in time for its departure”.

Then guests “were brought directly to a local high school, a designated safe location in Hilo, where refreshments were provided for their comfort and well-being”.

The line stated: “As a precaution and due to the temporary port closure, Pride of America has remained at sea, a safer location in situations such as this”.

The Cruise Lines International Association said in a statement: “CLIA cruise line members prioritise safety and security in all of their operations and have the unique ability to make adjustments if needed in the best interest of passengers and crew.

“Cruise lines have maintained an exceptional safety record thanks to ongoing intensive training, vigilance, and response plans, which include a strong coordinated approach across the maritime sector and with international bodies.”
