Holland America Line will be sending six ships to Alaska in 2021, which will be a massive relief for the regionโ€™s tourism industry which has taken a battering from COVID closures.

A new report filed by the Federal Maritime Commission, examining the economic impact of COVID-19 on the cruise industry in Alaska, Washington and Oregon states in America, found that last year, of the 2.2 million people that visited Alaska in 2021, 1.3 million were cruise tourists.

โ€œIn 2019, twice as many people than the number who live in the state came to Alaska and took a cruise. With the suspension of the cruise season, the economic activity of 1.3 million was wiped out of the Alaskan economy for the year,โ€ said Louis Commissioner Sola.

Under the best of circumstances and in any other state, there would be no disguising the consequences of losing that much revenue. In Alaska, in the context of the cruise industry, the consequences are greatly exacerbated.โ€

HAL this week announced it would be sending the Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdamย andย Volendam.ย Itineraries sail roundtrip from Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver,ย British Columbia, Canada,ย or one-way between Whitter (Anchorage), Alaska, and Vancouver.

โ€œWeโ€™re seeing strong interest for next summerโ€™s Alaska season as people anticipate being able to get out again, travel and spend time with family and friends,โ€ said Gus Antorcha,ย Hollandย Americaย Lineโ€™s president.

โ€œAlaska has a natural beauty and an aura that are unmatched, and itโ€™s right in our backyard. If you want to have an immersive experience, see Glacier Bay and go up to the Yukon, no one does it better thanย Hollandย Americaย Line. Weโ€™re ready to return with plenty of options for everybody from couples to multi-generational families.โ€

The cruise line has sailed in Alaska for more than 70 years, and the six ships will be sailing from April to September 2021. The line is also offering combined land and sea tours, where guests can cruise and extend their Alaskan holidays.
