Disney sets its sight on Australia and Asia, homeporting its largest ship in the region
NewsDisney has revealed it will be homeporting it’s newest ship, the massive 6,000-passenger Global Dream, in Singapore year round.
The cruise line known for its array of modern and classic Disney experiences onboard, purchased the ship from the now-defunct Dream Cruises.
The line appears to be making a play for the markets in the Southern Hemisphere, as Disney will also be sending the Disney Wonder to homeport in Australia.
This marks Disney’s first move into Southeast Asia, with the cruise line saying: “Singapore’s strategic location, world-class air connectivity and port infrastructure make it a thriving cruise hub in Southeast Asia.”
The move will mean the line will be making a play for the Australian market by attracting fly-cruise holiday makers. It will effectively have a floating theme park in the region, and is likely to attract families from all over SE Asia and Australia and New Zealand.
Disney Cruise Line says guests will be thrilled by “a diverse region that is home to over 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites”.
The ship is promised to homeport in Singapore for at least five years, set to become a mainstay in family vacations for the region.
Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro said: “This is a very exciting year for The Walt Disney Company — 2023 marks our 100th anniversary.
“As part of this, Disney Cruise Line is currently undergoing an ambitious expansion with new ships and new destinations around the world. We are incredibly excited to make Singapore the home port to our seventh-launched ship, which will sail from [Singapore] year-round starting in 2025.”
Global Dream was originally designed to fit in what would have been a record-shattering 9000 passengers, however, Disney will offer a new take on the space, fitting in about 6000 passengers, as well as 2300 crew members. Disney Wish fits 4000 passengers and about 1550 crew.
With Disney prices a solid tier above other family lines, this increased capacity could also lead to some better deals for those looking for the Disney cruise experience.
