Cruise Passenger readers always have plenty to say about what’s going on in Australian cruise, and in the broader cruise community. In Your Say, Cruise Passenger looks at the issues our readers are writing to us about on our blogs, posts and newsletters.
This week, cruise publication Cruise Hive released a story about the different kinds of people you can meet on cruises, particularly bad guests who can rub you up the wrong way.
Unsurprisingly cruisers had a lot to say about the matter. Common complaints from Cruise Passenger readers are aimed at reckless children and their parents, as well as those who hog chairs at the pool, and the response to this story was no exception.
Between Cruise Hive and Cruise Passenger readers, here are some of the types of people that were highlighted by cruisers.
- Sue Logan highlighted cruisers with poor hygiene: “The ones who refuse or don’t bother to wash their hands!”
- Zoe Croasdale can’t stand chair hogs: “2 folded towels and 2 unopened books left on a lounger ALL DAY! No -one to be seen.”
- Jacqueline Lewan highlighted those with poor elevator etiquette: “My issue with people being rude is people who think the elevator is there for them only. I have seen people push aside older people (which I am one) that have been waiting for an elevator before they arrived, also have seen older people riding a scooter drive around a group of people to get on first.”
- Monty Bollinger is fed up with ill-mannered teenagers and their parents: “The last cruise we were on last fall was too crowded with rude teenagers. It was difficult to go anywhere and not be exposed to these mannerless kids. I blame the parents for this behavior. If I would have acted like that my parents would have well, it wouldn’t have been pretty.”
- Ann Franklin highlighted those who are rude to the crew: “A man whistled at a waiter to clear a table, I said ‘no dogs are allowed on the cruise ship to fetch’!
- Steven Johnson highlighted those that won’t stop going about their cruising resume: “Cruise bores, those who have to boast about how many 100s cruises they have done, and of course they know more about cruising and the ship than the captain.”
- Deborah Levin is mindful of heavy drinkers: “I despise the ones wearing the T-shirt that says “I bought the drink package” as if I should watch out and beware of them because they’re probably drunk most of the time on the cruise.”
What types of people are you sick of running into on cruises? Do any of the opinions above resonate with you?

Elsewhere, Carnival Cruisers are disappointed to hear confirmation that they’ll be taken off of their loyalty program.
Virgin Brazelis says: “It’s disappointing to hear the only tier that has lifetime status is if you reach diamond level, being loyal to carnival obviously means nothing. I have just reached platinum so I barely get to enjoy the perks. This is a bad move by Carnival, many will cruise with other lines
Jenny Colquhoun said: “I’m sick to the back teeth of the whole thing and of the disloyalty that the Carnival corporation is showing their loyal customers.”
Aussies have been happy to see the progress that Broome is making as a port.
Nigel Beavis said: “Finally WA is getting serious with the cruise industry for the regional tourism opportunities.
“Hopefully it will attract the major cruise companies to invest in WA like they did in the new Brisbane cruise terminal. Imagine the Fremantle terminal being rebuilt into a proud gateway to Australia.”
Other cruisers are taking issue with gambling practices on cruise ships.
John Gercken says: “It has long been known that the ships assist the pokies to pay during the first few days of a cruise in order to excite gamblers and then assist the pokies to rarely pay during the last few days in order to recoup the payouts and make their profit.”
