Island Princess, along with Coral Princess, is a mid-sized Coral-class ship that offers transits through the Panama Canal. A 2015 dry dock added 121 staterooms and reorganised and refurbished certain public areas of the ship to accommodate the new cabins. The Horizon Court was remodeled to improve passenger flow, and its updated design includes the addition of an Italian pastry shop.
All cabins have satellite TV, refrigerator, hair dryer, safe, closet, phone, desk, twin beds that convert to a queen, 100 per cent Egyptian cotton linens and a nightly turndown service with chocolates on the pillow. Some cabins have Pullman beds to accommodate third and fourth passengers. All suites have a separate sitting area and coffee table, sofa bed, walk-in closet, complimentary mini-bar, and luxury pillow-top mattresses. Suite balconies have loungers, plus a dining table and chairs. Suite passengers can take advantage of complimentary laundry, professional cleaning and shoe polishing services, a private portrait sitting with an onboard photographer and a dedicated priority line at the passenger services desk. They also have unlimited use of the Lotus Spa Thermal Suite, a communal relaxation centre.
Bordeaux Dining Room, one of two main dining rooms (the other is the Provence), features elegant decor in muted tones with lots of lovely wood and etched glass panels. This restaurant allows Anytime Dining where passengers can opt to eat anytime within a longer timeframe. Lunch menus at Bordeaux offer items such as rollmop herrings with horseradish puree, fried tortillas stuffed with spicy beef or combos of soup, salad and sandwich. Glass-topped, metal-framed tables and white wrought iron chairs with pale green cushioned seats will welcome you at Trident Grill. This open-air restaurant attracts passengers looking for American grilled food such as hamburgers, hotdogs, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, bratwurst and fries. At Ultimate Balcony Dining, the atmosphere is full of romance. Champagne breakfast is $45 per couple and a lobster dinner is $100 per couple. Meals are set up and served on your balcony. This is for those celebrating an anniversary or for cruisers who just want to indulge in a little luxury.
The Lotus Spa and Beauty Salon is an Asian-inspired retreat. It offers a full range of body and facial treatments, steam and sauna facilities and a hair salon. There is a thermal suite where passengers can relax in a heated ceramic lounger after they enjoy a tropical/fog shower. Spa services include treatments such as a seaweed massage, a detoxifying treatment that starts with a warm aromatherapy body mask and includes a foot and scalp massage (75 minutes for $195), and Oxydermy facials to fight lines and wrinkles (50 minutes for $169). As part of Princess Cruises Chocolate Journeys partnership with master chocolatier Norman Love, the spa offers chocolate therapies including the Chocolate Indulgence Body Treatment, where a rich chocolate mask is applied to the body, followed by a massage using warm chocolate oil. The Lotus Spa Health & Fitness Center has Nordic trainers, running machines, several exercise cycles, treadmills, weight-training equipment and free weights.
Island Princess is family friendly, particularly during school holidays and to that end, it offers fabulous facilities for kids aged three to 17 years. The minimum age to sail is six months. There is such a choice of complimentary child-friendly activities that you may start to hanker for the days of your youth. There are arts and crafts, movies and cartoons, educational workshops, cookie decorating, T-shirt coloring, face painting and pizza and ice-cream parties. Remix caters to the teen crowd with sports competitions, late-night movies, talent shows, DJ workshops, hip-hop dance classes, teen makeovers, Playstation 2/3 and Wii tournaments, scavenger hunts, to name a few.
