P&O’s latest ship to join its fleet, the Pacific Adventure has been designed with the help of everyday Australians including the Beard family from Taree.
Matthew Beard, wife Kylie and daughters Hannah, 12 and Ruby, 9 came out with the idea of a “Big Red Phone” pizza delivery hotline where families can order piping hot pizzas to be delivered to the poolside.
Now they are working on other new ideas, experiences and features to be introduced on the Pacific Adventure when she debuts in Australian waters in October this year.
Matthew said the family took a chance by entering a P&O Facebook competition calling for entries to help design the Pacific Adventure.
“They were searching for people like us to become part of the team to develop The Adventure,” Kylie Beard told Manning River Times.
So the Beard family came up with the idea of a cardboard cut-out ship and made a rap and dance video about the new ship.
“It was a really cheesy and daggy rap. You have to not take yourself so seriously and look a bit nuts. It was an awesome experience and look what we’ve got out of it,” said Kylie Beard.
P&O picked the Beards and five other groups of people to help design its latest ship.
The Beard family has also been giving some feedback on the ship’s menu and were recently flown to the Grayboy Studios on the Gold Coast to watch and give ideas on the type of entertainment they would like to see on board The Pacific Adventure.
“It’s very exciting and very surreal. I can’t believe we were chosen. All we did was build a ship. The experience for the girls is really fun and doing it as a family makes it even more special.
“I can’t wait to see the ideas come together,” Kylie Beard added.
And the biggest prize of all – the Beard family will get to experience the new ship in December.
The Pacific Adventure will be P&O’s biggest Australian ship when the 2636-passenger ship arrives in Sydney in October.
The Adventure’s Twin Racer waterslides will be the ship’s centrepiece. There will also be a P&O Edge Adventure Park which will include a flying fox, walk the plank, rock climbing wall and lawn bowls.
The Adventure will also have an exclusive retreat called Byron Beach Club for suite guests with a private outdoor pool and whirlpool spas on the top deck.
The ship is currently cruising as Golden Princess under the Princess Cruises moniker before undergoing a extensive refurbishment and be transformed as P&O’s Pacific Adventure later this year.
