Discover Antarctica through its changing seasons

Antarctica is a land of pristine beauty, breathtaking wildlife and inestimable importance in an environmental and historical sense. Travelling to the base of the world on an ultra-luxury Antarctica expedition cruise is a long-held dream for many people.

At the South Pole there’s effectively just one day each year – with six months of daylight and six months of darkness. The Antarctic Peninsula is not as extreme but there are months of near darkness in winter and plenty of midnight sun – or, at least, midnight light – in summer.

Discover the secrets that each season reveals.

Gentoo penguins in Antarctica

Spring/Early Summer – November to December

Spring is an ideal time to visit the Antarctic Peninsula, when you can watch penguins begin courting, nest-building thievery and egg incubations. By late December, delightful chicks hatch and are hungrily fed by doting parents. Minkes, humpbacks and Southern Right whales arrive to feed beneath the 24-hour daylight.

South Georgia is an island teaming with wildlife and exploration history, while the Falkland Islands are unique. Explore the pristine beauty and surrounds during a Zodiac excursion past lounging seals or a helicopter flight^ over ancient glaciers. Witness the delightful king penguins balancing eggs on their feet, while couples feed freshly hatched chicks. Powerful male seals battle rival bulls to protect their 70-strong harem.

As Scenic Eclipse enters the Weddell Sea, a frozen world of magic and wonder unfolds before you, where vast tabular icebergs take your breath away. Journey on a voyage into the Weddell Sea , to visit the famous Snow Hill Island where you will see thousands of Emperor penguins nurturing their young. Meanwhile in the Falkland Islands, Magellanic penguin chicks start to emerge from the burrows while king penguins’ chicks start to hatch.
