10 must-visit European castles

From Dracula to Downton Abbey, the castles of Europeย have inspired many fictional tales, and they have plentyย of their own fascinating stories to tell, too. One of the best ways to see them is on a cruise.

Thereโ€™s nothing like visiting a medievalย castle to fire the imagination. Fromย their ramparts, many an arrow wouldย have travelled to its target on the landsย below as marauding bandits laid siege.

Most of these โ€œfairy-taleโ€ residencesย started life in the Middle Ages as fortressesย built to protect landownersโ€™ properties fromย invaders. Think Game of Thrones meetsย Vikings. They are usually perched on cliffsย and hilltops, commanding the best possibleย views of advancing enemies. They wereย distinctly bleak and lacking in creatureย comforts; cold, barren and not a lot ofย fun. Not surprisingly, once the wars wereย over, many fell into ruin. Then, in the 19thย century, many were rescued and restored.

Today, there are dozens of spectacularย castles open to the public where you canย view priceless collections of art, antiqueย furniture, tapestries, porcelain,ย silverware,ย weapons and books.ย An entertaining, well-informed guideย adds extra insights to your voyage into theย past and these days, some European riverย cruise operators offer the chance to tour aย castle and even dine with its royal owners.

Several of our favourite castles also offerย inspiration for garden and wine enthusiasts.ย When you have several hectares of land toย play with (and staff, of course, to maintainย manicured parks, gardens and vineyards),ย the opportunities are limitless.

1. Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England
Owned by the titled Percy family forย 700 years, this palatial residence starredย as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft andย Wizardry in the Harry Potter films andย took on the persona of Brancaster Castle inย the Downton Abbey 2014 Christmas special.ย There has been a castle on the site for 1,000ย years and itโ€™s open to the public from lateย March to the beginning of November.

2. Bran Castle, near Brasov, Romania
Legend has it that the 14th-century Branย Castle was the setting of Bram Stokerโ€™sย Gothic novel Dracula, although the writerย never visited Romania, let alone theย spooky edifice. It has connections withย the notorious Vlad the Impaler, who mayย have inspired Stokerโ€™s book and countlessย vampire movies. If you have a spare fewย million dollars, the castle is up for sale.

3. Burg Namedy, Andernach, Germany
Princess Heide von Hohenzollern, residentย owner of the 14th-century Namedy Castle,ย welcomes APT guests to her splendidย home with a champagne reception in theย Knights Hall and a banquet in the Hallย of Mirrors. Guests are also free to roamย around the rooms and courtyards. Theย surrounding gardens are part of Germanyโ€™s ย national heritage and host concerts andย annual art exhibitions.

4. Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Built beside an idyllic loch on the site ofย a Norse fortress, Dunvegan is said to beย the oldest continuously inhabited castle inย Scotland. It has been the ancestral home ofย the chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 yearsย and houses numerous historic clan treasures.ย The magnificent formal gardens date backย to the 18th century and the loch is home toย a seal colony.

5. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
Looming over Scotlandโ€™s capital cityย from its dramatic rock-top position,ย Edinburgh Castle was fought over by theย Scots and English for centuries. Today, it isย the countryโ€™s most-visited site. Donโ€™t missย the Crown Jewels, the oldest in Britain, andย the beautiful 12th-century St Margaretโ€™sย Chapel, the cityโ€™s oldest building.
