Pacific Dawn

Pacific Dawn

Looking out over the pool and water park of the newly refurbished Pacific Dawn, it’s easy to see that the Brisbane homeported ship is a perfect getaway for children and families.

She’s been refurbed for the younger family-oriented Queensland market – emblazoned with the Southern Cross across her hull, she has a more relaxed and casual feel.

Cruise Passenger is on board the ship, which has been fitted out with a new splash park, waterslides and as well as new public areas.

While we were bound for Airlie Beach for a day of fun in the sun and shore excursions, the devastation of Cyclone Debbie, which has ripped through much of north Queensland, has altered the itinerary to a “cruise to nowhere”.

But despite this, it has not dampened the spirits of the cruisers who are enthusiastic in enjoying everything the ship has to offer.

As the weather has been sunny and calm at sea, families pile onto the sun decks from morning to soak up the good weather.

P&O has installed two heart stopping waterslides – one slide kitted out in disco lights and dance music as you race down, and the other with twists and turns that go over the edge of the ship.

For the adrenalin junkies, there is the P&O Edge which has a number of activities which includes a rock climbing wall, segues, plank walks and even a zipline from one end of the ship to the other.

Those who have cruised on the Pacific Dawn prior to her refurbishment can see that the other major changes to her are in the interiors and public spaces.

P&O’s successful concept of The Pantry, which has nine different cuisine outlets, has been a big hit with the local market. During lunch and dinner, guests can dine on roasts from the carvery, Mexican burritos and tacos, Indian curries, Chinese stir-fries as well as delicious desserts. I highly recommend the beef burritos which seems to be one of the most popular lunch items.

By night, a section of The Pantry is cornered off to become Shell & Bones. The a la carte restaurant serves fresh hot and cold seafood platters for two. And it’s great value for money starting at just $40 for the platter. Also, try the lobster mornay. For just $20, it’s pretty great value for money.

The other areas which have undergone a major revamp is The Orient bar which has Cuban inspired décor – think succulents, white and green floral printed arm chairs and lounges as well as cane rockers.

The Promenade Bar has had minor updates to the décor but now, there are specialty P&O mixologists at the bar. Tell them your favourite flavours and booze choices and they will concoct you a mean cocktail.

Also part of the refurbishment is the new Elemis Spa. It has an extensive range of treatments available including everything from pedicures, waxing to hot stone massages and seaweed body wraps.

The spa also has a special thermal suite and for just $20, you can utilise the spa, sauna, steam room and hot bed for the entire cruise – highly worth it.

But while there is so much more to write about this wonderfully refurbished ship, yours truly is off to try out the zipline and rock climbing on P&O Edge.

Over and out till next time!

Virgin Voyages cuts steel of its first ship with fireworks, models and the hashtag #MakeShipHappen

Virgin Voyages cuts steel of its first ship with fireworks, models and the hashtag #MakeShipHappen

It’s been earmarked as the latest cruise brand with an edge. And especially if it’s going to be built by the fun-loving billionaire philanthropist, Richard Branson.

And on Wednesday, Mr Branson’s vision of creating Virgin Voyages came to life with the steel cutting of the brand’s first ship at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy.

While there are no details of the two ships which will be deployed in 2021 and 2022, the steel cutting ceremony itself was unlike any other.

There was an air of playfulness and whimsy with the steel cutter bearing a banner that said, “Hi. I’m the steel cutting machine.” Even the hashtag of the event, #MakeShipHappen was more align to the brand’s target market of millennials. Or as Virgin Voyages would say, “sailors and mermaids”.

While the man himself was not in attendance, Virgin Voyages President and CEO Tom McAlpin gave a rousing speech about the brand. And he was surrounding by some very attractive ‘ship engineers’ who were clad in Virgin red overalls, wife beater singlets and red hard hats.

“The design collective includes some of the world’s most stylish firms who are creators of design trends, not followers. Together they are imagining a vessel unlike anything sailors have experienced before that will be a complete departure from the ordinary,” said Mr McAlpin.

“With this group, we have a depth in creativity that brings a different perspective to space design at sea that will change cruising for good. Irresistible style will finally find its sea legs.”

To top off the event, the steel cutting was counted down by Mr Branson via a prerecorded video and as the cutter made its first incision engraving the logo on the ship’s first piece of steel, fireworks, pyrotechnics and music went off to celebrate the occasion.

The first Virgin Voyages ship will be 110,000-tonnes and be able to accommodate for 2,860 passengers. It will sail on seven-night itineraries from its Miami homeport, offering a vibe similar to those found throughout Branson’s other travel-related productions like Virgin Atlantic airline and Virgin Hotels.

Future sailors are invited to check out Virgin Voyages by visiting www.virginvoyages.com or follow @virginvoyages on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

Details around the newly refurbished Pacific Dawn

Pacific Dawn swimmer

The Pacific Dawn has arrived in Brisbane, fresh from her multimillion dollar refurbishment.

After spending two weeks in Singapore, she has some spectacular new features for Queenslanders.

The ship now has two new slides, both around 80 metres long. One slide is transparent so spectators can watch guests shoot through its twists and turns. While the other multi-coloured slide has music pumping from start to finish.

Also part of the refurbishment is the addition of P&O’s first virtual reality activity at sea from Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia.

One thing guests won’t miss is the new livery of the Pacific Dawn. Emblazoned across the hull of the ship is the iconic Australian emblem, the Southern Cross. Also in addition, are 3,000 new pieces of new and reupholstered furniture and 1,500 pieces of art and accessories.

In the teenage clubs, HQ and HQ+, the entertainment has gone to a whole new level with the cruise line’s new virtual reality experience, featuring a range of popular Sony PS4 titles including Tearaway Unfolded, Gravity Rush 2 and Ratchet & Clank as part of the exclusive partnership with Sony.

For the foodies, guests can try The Pantry which has already been so popular on P&O’s other ships. The Pantry is an international market place which has nine food outlets offering different types of cuisines. This includes the Mediterranean-inspired Nic and Toni’s and seafood restaurant Shell & Bones.

Meanwhile some of the ship’s key public spaces – including the atrium, Charlie’s cafe, The Orient and the Promenade Bar – have been redesigned to mirror the contemporary look which has become a trademark of the P&O fleet in recent years.

P&O President Sture Myrmell said the refurbished Pacific Dawn was the next step in the evolution of P&O’s modern Australian holiday offering, designed to deliver good times in a stylish yet relaxed setting.

Pacific Dawn not only features the new look and feel which has been so popular on our latest ships, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, she also provides a taste of what’s to come on our next ship Pacific Explorer, which debuts in June. We think she’ll be a real winner and we can’t wait to welcome guests onboard,” Mr Myrmell said.

The refit comes at the start of P&O’s biggest year of Queensland cruising, with two ships sailing from Brisbane year round. Between them, Pacific Dawn and Pacific Aria will offer a record 108 cruises to holidaymakers this year, up from 98 cruises in 2016.

Fares on the refurbished Pacific Dawn include a seven-night Pacific Island Hopper departing Brisbane on April 1, 2017 starting from $749* per person quad share.

Cruise Passenger will on the Pacific Dawn alter this month. Look out for our review.
