Journalist,
  • AmaWaterways has launched a new cooking itinerary in France.
  • The cruise line will enlist the help of French grandmothers, “les mamies” teach guests to cook.
  • It’s a shift towards popular demand for personalised experiences.

River cruising has long traded on a sense of intimacy, but AmaWaterways is leaning further into that idea with a new experience that brings human connection — and a touch of grandmotherly wisdom — onboard.

Launching on both the AmaDante and AmaLyra ships as part of the Paris & Normandy itineraries, “Cooking with Mamie” invites guests to engage with French culture in a way that moves beyond observation and into participation. It’s a new hands on, immersive cruise experience in France, with the traditional experts at the helm.

The concept is simple but effective: bring French grandmothers — “les mamies” — into the guest experience. Developed in partnership with Atelier des Mamies, the program connects travellers with women who have spent decades perfecting traditional recipes, turning what could be a standard onboard activity into something far more personal.

On board, small-group sessions (capped at around ten guests) see a mamie join the ship in Paris to host hands-on classes. Expect the kind of desserts that define French home baking — think Tarte Tatin and delicate madeleines — but with an added layer of storytelling. Techniques are shared alongside anecdotes, offering a window into family traditions that rarely make it into cookbooks.

It doesn’t stop onboard. Once ashore in Paris, guests can continue with their immersive induction into all things delicious and French as the experience extends ashore for those taking part in pre- or post-cruise stays. In Montmartre, guests can opt into a macaron-making workshop held at Atelier des Mamies’ intimate Paris studio. Here, the focus shifts to one of France’s most recognisable treats, with participants guided through the process in a setting that feels more like a family kitchen than a formal class.

It’s a move that reflects a broader shift in river cruising. Increasingly, operators are moving away from passive sightseeing towards experiences that feel embedded in local life. For AmaWaterways, that means pairing its established model, centrally located hotels, guided touring and seamless logistics, with activities that add emotional texture to the journey.

The addition of “Cooking with Mamie” embodies that direction. Rather than simply showcasing French cuisine, it offers food as a conduit for cultural immersion for guests. And if you’re worried about whether your skills are up to scratch, fear not, it’s less about mastering a recipe, more about understanding the people and stories behind it.

In a cruise market where differentiation is becoming harder to achieve, this kind of experience leans into what river cruising arguably does best: creating small, meaningful moments that linger well beyond the itinerary.
