AmaWaterways’ newest river ship, AmaMagdalena has been christened at a glittering naming ceremony in Mompox, Colombia this week.

AmaMagdalena is the first cruise ship to sail the Magdalena River.

“Today’s christening ceremony in Mompox marks a powerful moment not just for AmaWaterways but for the future of river cruising,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways.

“By opening the Magdalena River to luxury river cruising, we are laying the foundation for sustainable tourism that will benefit travellers and local communities alike for generations to come”

Godmother to AmaWaterways is Marianna Schlegel Donado, an interior designer who played a key role in the ship’s design.

“This ship carries the soul of our country: its colours, its craftmanship, its warmth. Seeing it sail the Magdalena River fills me with pride, not just for what we’ve built together but for the opportunity it creates to share the beauty of Colombia with the world,” she said.

AmaMagdalena can accommodate only 60 passengers with spacious balcony staterooms, a sundeck with a relaxing pool, a fitness centre and a spa treatment room. The ship’s main restaurant will serve locally-inspired Latin American cuisine. There will also be an al fresco specialty dining venue, the Bolivar Restaurant.

AmaMagdalena offes two immersive, seven-night itineraries, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla.

Guests will be able to immerse in the wonders of Colombia, known as the “Land of a Thousand Rhythms” as she sails on the Magdalena River. They will explore Palenque, the first free city in Colombia, the colourful neighbourhood of Getsemani in Cartagena and discover the art and culture of Colombia. Excursions include a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, an exclusive jazz performance in Mompox and birdwatching expeditions.

AmaMagdalena will be joined by a second ship, AmaMelodia which can accommodate 64 guests, later this year.

“We’ve seen strong bookings for Colombia coming out of Australia and New Zealand this year with travel advisors telling us this has been very appealing to their well-travelled clients who have been everywhere and done everything. They’re looking for new stories and experiences and to travel off-the-beaten track. That’s what a Colombian river cruise will offer them,” said Steve Richards, Managing Director Australia and NZ.
