Modern-day cruise ships have completely reimagined the face of travel. Offering a blend of luxury, entertainment, and premium amenities, they have evolved into a premier destination in themselves. Royal Caribbean International continues to be a leader in big ship cruising. In 2025, it has set the stage for a new era in passenger ships by launching Icon of the Seas, which has claimed the title of the biggest cruise ship in the world, weighing even more than the Titanic.

The battle to create bigger and better ships continues to wage on. Royal Caribbean continue to rolls out Icon class ships, each equalling Icon of the Seas as the biggest ship in the world. Star of the Seas has already joined Icon of the Seas as the worlds largest ship, Legend of the Seas is on its way in 2026, and two more Icon class ships are promised for 2027 and 2028.

Carnival Cruises doesn’t currently have any ships in the top ten, but is also making moves. Carnival is currently working on Project Ace which will roll out four ships, in 2029, 2031 and 2033, each about 230,000 gross tons each. These new ships are on target to beat Royal Caribbean’s Icon class ships not by gross tonnage, but by capacity, with the new vessels set to have capacity for almost 8000 guests.

Another major player is of course MSC Cruises. MSC Cruises already has some of the biggest ships in the world such as MSC World America and MSC World Europa, but even bigger ships are their way. MSC is building a new Constellation class of ships, which are set to overtake Royal Caribbean’s ships as the largest in the world by gross tonnage.

These ships will start rolling out in the 2030s, so they’re still a while off, but could come become the worlds biggest ships when they are built.

Norwegian Cruise Line also has big plans for the 2030s, with new ships coming, that might not quite rival the very top ships size-wise, but will definitely be huge. NCL has ordered four new mega ships for delivery in between 2030 and 2036, these massive ships will be about 226,000 gross tons, and between passengers and crew, will fit about 8300 people.
