Seabourn Pride officially became Star Pride yesterday, as Windstar christened the first of its three new luxury yachts.
The line purchased the ship along with Seabourn Spirit and Seabourn Legend from Seabourn Cruise Line last year as part of plans to expand into the luxury small ship cruising sector.
Delivered to the line in April, the ship underwent a three-week transformation to receive new furnishings, lighting, carpeting, ceiling finishes and floor coverings.
Additionally, the ship was fitted with new Destination Suites.
Around 200 past and present Windstar guests were given the opportunity to see the ship’s new features and join in celebrations at the inauguration in Barcelona, Spain.
Nancy Anschutz [wife of Phillip Anschutz – the owner of Windstar’s parent company Xanterra Parks and Resorts] was chosen as Godmother of the ship.
She broke a bottle of Veuve Clicquot on the ship’s hull before guests joined a pier-side fiesta with local entertainment, tapas and sangria.
Chief executive Hans Birkholz said Star Pride leads the way into Windstar’s new era of small ship cruising.
Following her inauguration, Star Pride sailed off on her inaugural voyage through Spain, France and Italy.
She will spend the European summer season in the Mediterranean before embarking on new itineraries in Asia and the Middle East during the off-season.
Windstar plans to launch its second luxury yacht, Star Breeze [formerly Seabourn Spirit] on 6 March 2015 in Nice, France and Star Legend [formerly Seabourn Legend] on 25 May 2015 in Rome, Italy.
