The summer cruising season seems to have kicked off a few days earlier than expected, with the Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl sailing into Sydney Harbour this morning.
The 2013/14-wave season is officially due to start on 5 October with the arrival of Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas. However, the sight of the two P&O ships navigating into Sydney at 6.00am may as well have been the buzzer that kick starts the season.
With each passing year, cruise ships are arriving earlier than usual – last year Rhapsody of the Seas cruised into Sydney on 14 October and in 2011 she didn’t arrive until 27 October.
This indicates the growing popularity of cruising down under.
According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia, the number of Australian cruise passengers has increase by 20 percent a year over the past decade.
