Ash from Chile’s volcano eruption causes flight delays and cancellations in Australia and New Zealand.
The eruption of Southern Chile’s Puyehue volcano on June 4 and 5 continues to impact flights in Australia and New Zealand. The eruption, which caused the evacuation of 3,500 people, produced a vast plume of smoke that has drifted across the Pacific into Australia and New Zealand airspace.
Domestic and international flights were cancelled over the weekend and while Qantas advises that Melbourne flights have resumed, flights to and from Adelaide, Tasmania and New Zealand have been cancelled for today. Jetstar has announced all New Zealand domestic and Singapore to New Zealand flights are cancelled for today while trans-Tasman and Adelaide flights are cancelled until at least 12.30pm and 1pm today respectively.
Virgin will now operate normal scheduled services today while running additional Sydney to Melbourne and Melbourne to Hobart flights to deal with the backlog of passengers. Qantas will also run an additional Boeing 747 between Melbourne and Sydney.
