Wednesday 13 October saw the launch of the Southern Hemisphere cruise season on board the giant Sun Princess. Sally Macmillan (Editor, Cruise Passenger magazine) and I were among the media and VIPs gathered on the ship’s pool deck for official speeches and a taste of what passengers, about to board, may expect.
We sampled wonderful kiwi fruit cocktails and great finger food with a Kiwi flair, including a specially prepared ‘lolly log. A group of Maori singers and dancers entertained us while NZ videos played on the huge TV screen.
Carnival Australia’s Senior VP, Jenny Lourey, said “Each of the Company’s ships generates around $500,000 in crew and passenger spending, port fees and providoring. Where new passengers embark, up to $1 million is generated, so there is no question about the economic values that flow from cruising.”
Princess Cruises’ Commercial Director, Stan Birge said, “More than one million Australians visited New Zealand each year and that an increasing number were arriving by ship.”
