Star Cruises is eying mass cruising after placing an order for a second mega-ship.
In October last year the line signed a US$960 million contract with German shipbuilder, Meyer Werft for the construction of an 18-deck luxury cruise ship to hold 3,300 passengers.
This month Star Cruises signed a second contract with the same shipping yard for a sister-ship.
It will be the line’s eighth ship, and will hold almost twice the amount of passengers than, SuperStar Virgo, the largest ship in the current fleet.
In addition to extra passengers, the new mega ship will also boast more restaurants, entertainment venues and well appointed suites than the rest of the fleet.
She will be designed for the Asian market and will employ up to 2,030 crew.
Star Cruises said the new ship will further consolidate the line’s leading position in Asia.
“The construction of these two ships is in line with Star Cruises’ long-term strategy in modernising and expanding its fleet,” the company statement said.
“Like the sister ship to be delivered in fall 2016, the new ship will be designed to cater to the unique preferences of Asian cruisers and enable Star Cruises to take advantage of the growing demand for cruise travel in Asia-Pacific.
“It will be a mega cruise ship that Asia truly deserves.”
