Celebrity Cruises says it is planning to bring a more contemporary approach to Europe’s rivers when it launches its first river cruise ships in 2027, with immersive local experiences and elevated service designed to distinguish the brand in an increasingly competitive market.
Speaking to Travel Weekly, Celebrity Cruises Senior Vice President of Sales and Services Katina Athanasiou revealed new details about how the cruise line plans to stand apart from established river operators.
One of the biggest differences, she said, will be the way guests experience destinations.
Rather than relying solely on traditional guided tours, Celebrity will introduce its new Storyteller Series, where excursions are led by locals with personal connections to the places they call home.
“The difference is that they’re sharing their own stories rather than delivering a memorised script,” Athanasiou explained, saying the concept is designed to give travellers a deeper understanding of each destination.
The cruise line will also introduce a self-guided experience called “Keys to the City” in selected destinations. Through a mobile app, guests will be able to personalise their sightseeing based on their interests, choosing themes such as culture, architecture or active exploration while exploring independently.
The move reflects Celebrity’s broader ambition to appeal to travellers looking for a more flexible and modern river cruise experience.
Athanasiou said the decision to enter the river cruise market followed extensive customer research, which found significant interest among Celebrity’s existing guests.
More than half of Celebrity’s customers have either already taken a river cruise or expressed interest in doing so, while over 70 per cent of bookings for the new river cruises have come from existing Celebrity guests.
“We knew there was demand, but we also knew many guests were looking for something more contemporary and innovative,” she said.
What’s in store

Celebrity has announced plans to build 20 river ships, one of the largest commitments ever made by an ocean cruise brand entering the sector.
Despite growing concerns about congestion on Europe’s busiest waterways, Athanasiou said Celebrity’s itineraries will combine iconic ports such as Amsterdam and Budapest with smaller, lesser-known destinations where the company believes it can best deliver its new style of shore experiences.
The cruise line also expects its recently integrated loyalty program across the Royal Caribbean Group brands to play an important role in attracting guests.
Under the unified program, travellers can earn and retain loyalty benefits across Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, allowing them to move between brands without losing status.
Athanasiou described the initiative as a “game changer”, saying it gives guests the flexibility to choose different holiday styles as their travel preferences evolve, whether that’s a family holiday on Royal Caribbean, a premium cruise with Celebrity or an ultra-luxury voyage with Silversea.
Celebrity also believes its reputation for hospitality at sea will translate naturally to Europe’s rivers.
Athanasiou acknowledged that some travellers may question whether an ocean cruise brand can successfully deliver an authentic river cruise experience, but said Celebrity intends to bring the same service standards, crew training and hospitality that have become hallmarks of its ocean fleet.
While Athanasiou admitted river cruising had not traditionally been her own preferred style of holiday, she said the new product has been designed specifically to appeal to travellers seeking a fresh alternative to more traditional river cruise experiences.
Celebrity Cruises will launch its first river vessels in 2027, marking the Royal Caribbean Group’s long-awaited entry into the European river cruise market. The company has previously confirmed plans for a fleet of 20 purpose-built ships over the coming years.
The cruise offers and itineraries

Celebrity Cruises’ inaugural river cruise season will begin in August 2027, with sailings aboard its first two purpose-built ships, Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, operating on the Danube and Rhine rivers. The launch program features a collection of seven-night itineraries, including Danube: Budapest & Bavaria, Lower Danube Discovery, Rhine: Castles & Culture, Dutch Waterways & Tulips, and Christmas Markets cruises.
Departures run from August 5 through December 2027, with fares starting from approximately $4,577 per person for a River View stateroom, and ranging to more than $10,500 for top-suite accommodation, depending on the sailing and cabin category. Every voyage includes all meals, premium beverages including alcohol, Wi-Fi, entertainment and at least one included shore excursion each day. Guests can also extend their holiday with pre- and post-cruise stays in cities including Budapest, Prague, Amsterdam and Lausanne.
On board, Celebrity is bringing many of its ocean-cruise hallmarks to the rivers, with spacious staterooms featuring king-size beds, six dining venues, an infinity-edge pool, butler service in every suite and new destination-led experiences such as its locally hosted Storyteller Series.
