The latest Australian ship to sail on Europe’s waterways is set to be launched by the world’s first supermodel, Twiggy, later today in the river cruise capital Amsterdam.

Emerald Sky  – known as a “Star Ship” – is a first for the Evergreen line and the latest bold step from Australian company Scenic to conquer the burgeoning river cruise market.

Emerald sets the company on course to take on one of Europe’s biggest ship owners, Viking, which this month launched a world record 16 ships in one dramatic ceremony.

Emerald Sky continues owner Glen Moroney’s signature ability to load his vessels with river cruise firsts – “indoor balconies” featuring the floor-to-ceiling glass windows which open electronically; and a swimming pool with a retractable roof which converts to a cinema at night.

“Emerald Sky’s interiors are modern, sleek and stylish with no stuffy drapes or over-sized furnishings.”

But perhaps of more importance to travellers, Emerald offers 182 passengers in 90 double cabins and two special single cabins at a more competitive price, allowing travellers to option their cruise or stay at a base price value which competes with Europe’s leading lines.

The ships are the same hull design that Scenic has used to devastating effect in the luxury market.  But Emerald Sky’s interiors are modern, sleek and stylish with no stuffy drapes or over-sized furnishings.

The food on a first night for the kitchen staff was a buffet dinner for agents and the media in the 186-seater dining room which proved an immediate hit, with many expressing surprised by the quality.

Owner Glen Moroney, hosting a table of staff, told Cruise Passenger he was very happy with the first day.

Next stop is an inaugural trip along the Rhine that includes Cologne, Koblenz, Rudesheim, Heidelberg, the Black Forest and Basel.
