The whimsical hull design for Norwegian Getaway has been unveiled in Miami, where the ship will homeport from January 2014.
Designed by Miami modern artist and muralist David “LEBO” Le Batard, it features a tropical theme reminiscent of the artist’s home town.
“Norwegian Getaway will be Miami’s ship and, therefore, we wanted to ensure that her hull was designed by an artist with strong ties to Miami and the Latin community,” Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan said.
“LEBO’s incredible design reflects all of the elements that Miami is known for – sea, sun and paradise.
“This artwork will surely make Norwegian Getaway an iconic part of the Miami skyline when she arrives as Miami’s largest year-round ship in 2014.”
Born in New York City, LEBO was raised in South Florida by Cuban Émigré parents and cites the influence of the ocean in his work which has been seen in museums and galleries around the world.
Responsible for site-specific installations and murals in areas including: Miami’s Calle Ocho; Uptown New Orleans; and downtown San Francisco, LEBO has also been known as the innovator of Post-modern Cartoon Expressionism.
Notable brands that the Miami artist has worked with include Harley Davidson, Gibson Guitars and Ferrari with LEBO also making his mark on Gloria Estefan’s latest album.
