Surf’s up! Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas will undergo a stem to stern revitalisation this year, which includes the installation of Royal Caribbean’s FlowRider.

The surf simulator, which is already popular on the line’s Oasis-class and Freedom-class ships, will be fitted on the vessel during a dry dock in Singapore from October this year. The rollerblading inline track on deck 13 will be removed to make way for the new activity.

Australians will be among the first to break-in the ride, when Voyager returns to our shores for her third local season in November this year.

Revealed at a media event in Bondi Beach, Australia, Royal Caribbean Asia-Pacific regional vice president Gavin Smith said it will be Australia’s first surf simulator at sea.

He said the ride can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and is even Royal Caribbean chairman’s favourite onboard activity.

“Guests will be able to ride the perfect wave without sharks or jelly fish. It’s just the views and the vista of the wonderful sea,” he explained.

Trialing the FlowRider himself on a recent Independence of the Seas sailing, Mr Smith said to it’s easy to master the activity, saying guests simply need to know how to stand on two feet. He also suggested a pair of cosies firmly affixed to the body just incase you wipeout.

“We’re providing active holidaymakers with a fun product on the aft end of one of the world’s most beautiful ships,” he added.

To promote the ride, Royal Caribbean has even appointed pro flow-boarder, Adam Wildman as the line’s official FlowRider Ambassador.

Wildman is currently fifth in the world in the pro body board division and is the number one rider outside of America.

Additionally, during the month-long refurbishment, Voyager of the Seas will also receive a 220-square foot outdoor 3D movie screen by the pool; and virtual balconies in interior rooms where guests can see real-time sights and sounds of the sea on an 80-inch, high definition screen framed to look like a real balcony.

Three new dining venues will also be introduced, including Izumi Japanese Cuisine, which will replace Cloud Nine & Seven Hearts; Royal Caribbean’ signature Chop’s Grille steakhouse will be fitted where Portofino’s is currently located; and Giovanni’s Table Italian trattoria will replace The Vault on deck four.

Deck three of The Vault will be replaced with new interior staterooms and the Scoreboard Sports Bar will be removed to make way for more retail space.

Voyager of the Seas will arrive in Darwin on 30 November 2014 during a repositioning cruise from Singapore. She then sails to Sydney where she will officially start her 2014/15-Australian summer season.
