RCI to refund jilted Brilliance passengers
NewsPassengers onboard Brilliance on the Seas will be compensated for stormy weather.
For the second time in the past week, unfortunate cruise ship passengers have endured “a frightening experience” onboard a cruise ship in the midst of a severe storm.
Passengers onboard Royal Caribbean International’s 2500-passenger Brilliance of the Seas will receive a refund of their fares as well as onboard credit to compensate for the unexpected and extreme weather conditions experienced during a freak Eastern Mediterranean storm.
About 30 passengers were treated for minor injuries in the ship’s hospital, with the most serious injuries being two people who sustained fractures, as the ship lurched in what RCI described as “extreme wind and sea conditions including heavy seas and 70-knot winds, nearly double what had been forecasted.”
Heavy rocking of the 90,000-GRT vessel caused some staterooms to lose power, damage to the gym and beauty salon as well as much broken glass and furniture, some sources say. The beauty salon, video games room and disco will remain closed until the cruise ends on Friday. Here’s a video of the storm and some of the damage.
Brilliance of the Seas is on a 12-night roundtrip cruise from Barcelona that visited Palermo, Piraeus and Rhodes and is currently heading for Malta.
Cruise Passenger reported last Tuesday (Soon-to-be Orion II breaks down mid-cruise) that Clelia II had encountered 30-foot swells in Antarctica’s Drake Passage, smashing a bridge window causing electrical failures. Crew managed to restore power to the engine and the ship was able to return to Ushuaia unaided.
