Orion’s orangutan partnership

Passengers and primates alike will benefit from new conservation collaboration.

Orion Expedition Cruises yesterday announced it has partnered with the world’s foremost authority on primates, Dr Biruté Mary Galdikas, and her Borneo-based orangutan rehabilitation centre.

“This is something out of the ordinary, exclusive to Orion. I am very excited to be able to take our guests to this remarkable destination in a responsible, controlled manner, and to help contribute to a positive future of an endangered species suffering from reduced natural habitat and poaching,” said Sarina Bratton, managing director of Orion Expedition Cruises.

As part of the partnership, Orion will offer financial support to the project, located in Camp Leakey, while Dr Galdikas (pictured left with Bratton) will take on the role of guest lecturer on board Orion II’s Camp Leakey voyages and also guide passengers around the rehabilitation centre.

“I am confident that our guests will enthusiastically embrace the program, especially when they see we can all make a positive difference with improved outcomes for the animals in their care,” Bratton added.
