It is the last major big ship company without a superliner in Australia, but that may be about to change.

There’s talks that Norwegian Cruise Line may finally bring its first ship to Australia.

Rumours about a Norwegian ship being based in Australia have been circulating for years.

Last year, cruiseabout.com.au said the line would base a ship in Australia in 2014 after regional vice president, sales and marketing Australia and New Zealand Nicole Constantin said the line was eager to “join the party”.

“You just have to look at the fact we’re launching two new ships (in 2013 and 2014) so our other ships have to move somewhere, and where do you go? Where you don’t have any ships,” she said.

It’s surprising the line doesn’t already have a ship based out of Australia, particularly considering the Australian market is the line’s fourth largest market after the UK, Germany and Spain.

However, according to a fresh round of chatter, Norwegian is planning to rectify the situation, by basing its 4,100-passenger ship, Norwegian Epic in Australia in 2015.

A Cruise Passenger source that recently disembarked Norwegian Epic says the ship is definitely heading down under, and is likely to be here in the next two years.

However, a Norwegian spokesperson based in Australia outright denied the news, claiming that it is all a rumour.

“There are no ships coming down to Australia,” the spokesperson told Cruise Passenger.

I guess only time will tell but we’d love to see one of Norwegian’s artistic bows grace Australian shores.
