P&O Cruises ends the practice of charging compulsory gratuities.

As of October 1, P&O Cruises’ has eliminated automatic passenger tipping from its fleet, which consists of Pacific Dawn, Pacific Sun,Pacific Jewel and the soon-to-be launched Pacific Pearl. The move was announced by the cruise line last December – many cruisers having expressed dissatisfaction with the practice of charging compulsory gratuities, although tipping has many equally passionate supporters. Under the change, the previously recommended daily gratuity of $7.50 per passenger will no longer be automatically added to passengers’ onboard accounts. Guests will still have the option to reward P&O Cruises’ crew for exceptional service at their own discretion. Jenny Lourey, senior vice president of Carnival Australia, said, “P&O Cruises strives to lead the way in customer satisfaction and this change signifies both that and our focus on catering for Australian tastes.”
