Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that its 4,000-passenger ship Norwegian Breakaway, scheduled for delivery in April 2013, will be sailing from New York year-round from May 2013.

The ship will sail 88 cruises from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal through to March 31, 2015 over which time it is expected to bring an estimated 140,000 additional embarking passengers into New York – passengers who are expected to spend an estimated $35 million in the city.

New York city Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who was present at the announcement, also advised that the city has committed $4 million in renovations and upgrades to the cruise terminal.

“Out-of-town visitors spent $31 billion last year, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in our restaurants, shops, hotels, and cultural institutions,” he said. “By making New York City home to its newest and largest ship, Norwegian Cruise Line is further confirming our standing as a top cruise destination…”
