More single supplement deals for solo cruisers

Great news for solo travellers – you don’t have to pay double to travel alone.
This brochure season has seen more offers than ever before aimed at the growing army of solo cruisers – and the lines are offering more cabins aimed at this market.
Cruise Passenger spoke to solo travel expert Patrice Sydor, product manager for the NRMA’s Living Well Navigator, which focuses on solo travelling.
She says the number of passengers travelling on their own has increased by 25 per cent over the last five years.
“Cruise lines are now offering more single supplement deals – some 25 per cent and some even at 50 per cent.
“There are now plenty of great deals for solo cruisers because the lines have now realised that people want to travel alone.
“In some cases maybe the wife wants to go cruising and husband wants to stay home. The wife may not want to share a cabin with someone or pay the extra cost. There are also lots of retirees who have lost their partners, so these solo deals and cabins are perfect for them.”
Ms Sydor said river cruises offer better single supplement deals than larger ocean liners.
“Lines like Voyages of Antiquity, APT and Avalon Waterways Cruises have good single supplement deals. River cruise companies find it more difficult than ocean liners to fill their cabins which is why they offer better solo deals.
“In terms of the larger ocean liners, Costa Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines have the best single cabins which also offer a range of activities and specialised areas for solo travellers.
“But you have to remember that not all of the lines’ ships have these specific cabins and deals. If you are looking for luxury lines, Cunard and Silversea. Locally in Australia, P&O is a great ocean line for solos.
And Ms Sydor’s advice to solo cruisers?
“Make sure you sign up to newsletters of the cruise companies you’re interested in travelling in. And also, be flexible with your dates because that is the time when you’ll be able to get the cheapest solo deals.”
