Falmouth opens, finally
NewsJamaican port welcomes its first cruise ship after a series of setbacks.
Jamaica’s newest and highly anticipated cruise port, Falmouth, has welcomed the arrival of its first cruise ship, Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager of the Seas, after more than a year of delays.
The two-ship pier is located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, and is the starting point for cruise passengers to take more than 60 shore excursions to nearby attractions.
Voyager of the Seas arrived yesterday with a ship full of passengers and will be followed by Freedom of the Seas on February 23, Navigator of the Seas on February 24 and Oasis of the Seas on March 22, which is when the official grand opening celebrations will take place.
Although the project’s joint-developers, the Jamaica Port Authority and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, gave Voyager of the Seas the green light, restorations of historic buildings are still underway and many of the intended shops, restaurants and attractions are not yet completed.
Once finished, the $170 million development will highlight the port’s rich Georgian architecture and the area’s history as a rum and sugar exporter.
